I didn't (and still don't) really know who Gavin Ortland was, But when I heard Megan Basham talking about her book it instantly triggered a lot of red flags in my mind. I'm not woke or anywhere near woke. I listen to daily wire frequently. However the rhetoric she was using really sounded alot more like a political pundit (like Ben shapiro or Jenk Uger) than anything like genuine Christian concern. The debates in the church absolutely must remain without the ugly polarized back stabbing tactics that politics uses.

I was glad for Gavin Ortland’s response. I was in the midst of taking an on line class from him so it was helpful to those who respect him to hear his side. It also caused me to look into it more which lead me to Warren Cole Smiths response. His piece everyone should read. I don’t see how Megan Basham can walk with a clear conscience right now. The evil one is certainly working overtime and enjoying himself. This division in the church is tragic. We have lost our witness. We need to return to our first love, Jesus. That’s what Bill Bright who founded CRU years ago always said. Our hearts need to be softened to Christ and to our brothers and sisters.

If there is any good to come from Ms. Basham's shameful attack on Pastor Ortland, it is that my feed has become rich with small-batch Christian YouTube creators. Like most folk, I never heard of Ms. Basham until I saw the video from Pastor Ortland.

It has been an eye-opening few days of watching videos in support of Ms. Basham. Truth is an essential to our faith. Fairness and grace, too. What she is saying of certain Christian leaders is low-hanging fruit. There were people in the same denominations who protested against the positions of these leaders, prayed for their repentance, and left their churches. Her claims against Pastor Ortland, however, and the support she has received from more prominent YouTubers, including the unchallenged platform on their channels, are astonishing.

Is Christianity at this point in the history of our nation? Journalistic integrity, a commitment to the truth, and fairness did not spring from the secular. These came from Christian values. What concerns me is that Christians are becoming less intellectual and they are becoming less committed to the truth, in favor or advocating an agenda. We have forsaken benevolence. We have abandoned learning and rigorous study. We have taken truth as impermanent and of no consequence.

The koolaid Basham and her acolytes have been drinking is strong. I was in that world for awhile, and the highest doctrine they hold to is “being right”. Everyone else is an imbecile or worse. It reeks of arrogance, anger, spite and self-satisfaction. That is what led me out - holding up a mirror, doing some critical thinking and listening to other perspectives. I realized I didn’t want to stay in that suffocating echo-chamber.
I think one day in the not-too-distant future, Megan Basham will be embarrassed that she put this book out into the world.

There was a trend I started noticing as I was maturing in my own faith, that for all the time I spent watching people like Basham was that the work they are doing isn't really built to last. Much of these things won't be read 50 years from now, and I think that is the tragedy of the rage baiting culture that many within evangelicalism are indulging in. I'm certain that the church will remember Kellers exposition of the Prodigal God, and Ortlunds defense of protestant theology far more than they remember Basham's "well researched" polemic.

Good points Dean . I watched Ortlund’s videos ( his response and the videos in question in her book ) she is a bit off base on her assessment of what he said . It’s interesting in his response that he mentioned that he has sought counsel from several different sources. He distinguishes between his friends, folks in the Christian community and then said others . I have a suspicion he has looked into legal help. Before all this is over I think someone will lawyer up.
I do find it funny that she got an endorsement from John MacArthur. I would have for sure thought John would have told Megan to go home . You know Megan being a woman.

Thank you brother for putting this out there, it needed to be said. So many of these people forget or never knew to begin with what the true Church is. It isn’t “big eva” it isn’t even the church we attend. It is the body of Christ, all believers who have been baptized into his body. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this sensationalism has been published in an election year, considering she’s been discussing this for quite a while now. Who was it for sale again 🤔.

I’m no longer Evangelical due to theological stuff, but I love Ortlund. Bashum’s book shows that right wing grift is a bigger problem in Evangelicalism than left wing grift. I’m pretty right wing but the answer to rampant leftism in mainline Protestantism isn’t rampant rightism in Evangelicalism.
