INFJs, INFPs, and the Midlife Transition

INFJ personality types and INFP personality types tend to have a different experience of the midlife transition than other mainstream personality types. Since the midlife transition is not something that is celebrated in Western culture, it can be a difficult period of life for mainstream personality types. These more traditional types may feel like they’re losing their youth, beauty, and status in society.

INFJ personality types and INFP personality types tend to be less attached to youth and beauty, and they also don’t tend to value their status role in society as much as other types do. Instead, INFJ personality types and INFP personality types value growth and individuation. Since midlife is one of the best times to tune into the potential for growth and individuation, INFJ personality types and INFP personality types tend to go through big identity shifts in midlife, and they also tend to welcome these shifts.

During the midlife transition, INFJ personality types and INFP personality types may quit jobs, end long relationships, move to a different city or country, and begin a new period in life of deep creativity. INFJ personality types and INFP personality types may feel isolated or alone as this happens, but they don’t need to be alone as they navigate this challenging and exciting period in life, because there are other INFJ personality types and INFP personality types who are going through the same process. When INFJ personality types and INFP personality types can find support and understanding in the midlife transition process, the experience becomes less confusing and much more illuminating.

Who else here had a midlife transition every few years since becoming self reliant?

Sometimes I think I'm TOO introspective, and it's currently messing with my mental health.

I’m about to turn 40 and I’ve always said I would NEVER care about this but it has literally sent me into an anxiety spiral. I’m an INFJ and I feel so lame feeling this way but I grew up with a mom who was OBSESSED with her looks. I can remember being 6 years old and me and my cousins playing and pretending we were adults and our idea was to complain about our looks. She would tell me when I was young that I better do this and that because I will hate it when I get old. I was determined to never be like her but despite my best efforts my anxiety has latched onto this and It has been SO frustrating!!!! Despite it all people mistake me for my 20s.

I feel like I’m going through a mid life awakening. If that makes sense to anybody. I don’t know. It barely makes sense to me. It’s scary, heavy, and confusing but I feel like it’s what I make of it.
I don’t feel like I’m past my prime like most people my age. I feel like I got plenty of life left in me but do have massive anxiety about f….ing it up

Glad to see someone speak out about this, and I can totally resonate. Me myself is an INFJ, and in my experience, life becomes more friendly as I age. I don't mean to say that aging is good because it’s true that our physical functions decline as we grow old. What I mean is that my mindset and perspective on life have become clearer with age. The more I experience, the better I understand myself and the world around me. This process is precious to me, and I cherish all that I have accumulated, even if it may not seem valuable to others.

Hi Lauren! By chance, I discovered your channel a couple weeks ago! I wasn't on the topic, but Personality types came up in the YT recommendations! 💡 It immediately sparked recollection of the MB test I took at a community college 17 years ago where I was attending as an adult while going through a divorce. Hadn't thought about it since then! I dug out the paperwork after 5 moves/3 states!! I'm INFP. Had NO time back then to focus on it, but now that I'm in this life transition phase, my head is clearer & I can finally discover Me! It was so affirming to hear you say that us INFJs & INFPs have an "easier" time of this phase than some others! It's true, for all the reasons you outlined! Also, my daughter gifted me your book last week!: "The INFJ Revolution." Thanks for your work.

I'm going thorugh a mini crisis at 33 (starting at 31) and it does feel like a crisis, and I keep thinking that the crisis part is that becoming aware of this makes me very panicked, but I don't think I'm ready for it right now and I have this weird feeling that I'm just gradually preparing for a big change in a few years, when it's matured inside. In the meantime, trying not to freak out and continue to live my present in this ambivalence and not block growth within my current chosen path. You got a new subscriber! I'm loving your videos! I get infp and infj depending on the phase of life and I pretty much relate to both.

As an astrologer, the midlife crisis transits are a series of 4 distinct transits that everybody experiences from late 30s to mid 40s. Neptune square neptune, pluto square pluto, saturn opposite saturn and uranus opposite uranus. INFP here. These transits make people questions and re evaluate everything. and then make changes.

Those first two minutes had me concerned. 😂 I knew INFJs were not like that. I'm 47 and just a couple of months ago embarked on my midlife transition. I gave up my house and moved into an RV. Best decision I ever made! Challenging without a doubt. And I've been processing a lot of the dynamics in my life that led me here. Typical infj stuff. I've grown a lot during this time period!
