Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, lived an exceptionally long life, dying on April 9, 2021 at the age of 99. While his life was full of remarkable highs, the mere fact of his longevity meant that he was no stranger to tragedy either.

One such tragedy was the death of his sister, Princess Cecilie, in 1937. Prince Philip's sister died in a plane crash en route to London from Germany, an event that was depicted on the Netflix series The Crown. But The Crown's plane crash scene didn't tell the whole story about the tragedy of Princess Cecilie's death. Here's everything you need to know.

Imagine being a newborn baby coming into this world only to die a few minutes later in a plane crash. Very sad story for all involved.

They same biographer asked prince Philip "how was your home life, like?". Prince Philip said " I never had a _home_

This is so sad. Prince Phillip had a stronge attitude. He was a strong person.

Her only daughter, princess Johanna stayed at home. She died at 3 because of meningitis. That family was cursed ( grand dukes of Hesse that is).

I'm glad Phillip and The Queen are together again If there is an afterlife & I'd like to think there is somewhere beyond this

That's very tragic. But I must say she's very beautiful too

it ought to be pointed out that the diagnosis of his mother was not necessarily correct.

This of course, is tragic....but I lost my eldest brother when I was six - he was fourteen. The only remark I would agree with the late Philip is that you do, "have to get on with it"....there seems to be some (deliberate) distinction between Royal families & commoners, but fundamentally, it matters not who you are - tragedy may visit anyone, at anytime. Both in Philip's case, & mine own (& millions of others), there was no psychotherapy or support network for the bereaved, & to a certain extent, whilst the loss of any relative is horrendous, I consider in today's climate, there is too much emphasis laid upon such loss - unfortunately, you cannot bring those loved ones back - you can acknowledge their death & (inexorably) move forward; life is for the living after all.
Stay safe, everyone :)

It’s no wonder Philip was so tough. He went through so much before he became an adult (leaving Greece, losing his mother to mental illness, and losing his sister, brother-in-law, and nephews to a freak plane crash).

I saw a video last year detailing the relationship of Charlie's older deceased cousin William who was involved with a Jewish divorced woman 8 years older than him in the 70's. Prince William is named after him. Naturally the palace nay nayed the pairing(surprise, surprise right?!). Sadly, William was killed in a plane crash at an air show. There is footage, very chilling! He was an avid pilot. I think he died in the late 70's or early 80's. He was only in his 30's. His ex never married I believe, and still mourns him. There are a couple of documentaries about them on YT.
