Porsche Macan v BMW X4 Review: Potent Petrol SUVs under $100k

Spending $100,000 on an SUV is becoming an increasingly common occurrence in Australia, but never before has there been so much choice, particularly if the ‘S’ in SUV means anything to you.

The new Porsche Macan and BMW X4 to take on the existing Range Rover Evoque and Audi SQ5. All four SUVs are all-wheel drive and showcase just how good an SUV can be for the driving enthusiast in all of us.

Putting aside the Range Rover Evoque as it’s cheaper, four-cylinder-only and getting on a bit, and Audi’s SQ5 as it’s diesel-only, we’re pitting a Porsche Macan S petrol against a top-spec BMW X4 35i.

I would definitely prefer the porsche as i think it looks and performs better.. And even if you think about resale value, the porsche is a clear winner. I saw a 2 yr old macan with about 15000 km on it at the local dealers here in germany for about 1500€ less than what it would cost new if you ordered it right now (without any discounts for both vehicles)

You have to be a madman to choose the X4 over the Macan. The Macan is just too perfect IMHO

Tick the comfort seat option if you want better seats in the bimmer. The Macan is definitely great value for money and maybe a more desirable badge. The long waiting list could be a problem. Four months for our X5 M50d already seems very long but I heard one needs to wait 9 months for a Macan...

I do agree that the nav screen in the Porsche could use some updating (which they probably will update it sooner or later) but still an amazing SUV. Porsche's quality is just far superior inside and out.

What I don't like about X + even number BMWs in this case X4 they try to make a sporty SUV by modifying the non-x version on which it's based to fit an SUV, and the result is not as good looking as if they would have thought a sport SUV from scratch like in the Macan's case.
Just look at the back of the BMW X4 there's just something that it's off with the wheel arch and height ration of the trunk.

i'm still waiting for my Macan S which was ordered 3 months ago and wont go into production until Dec and wont be delivered until Mar or Apr 2015. 9 Months!!! My dealer told me cars ordered now wont be delivered until September next year

It is fair to say the Macan is by far the best luxury compact SUV in its segment. A better comparison than the BMW X4 is the 3.0 Audi Q5 (V6) which brings to the table 272 hp with an exterior and interior that dates back nearly six years (with some minor refinements). The Macan S has underneath its hood a V6 twin-turbo producing 340hp with a base price only slightly higher than the Q5 (49, 900). The PDK (Porsche's double clutch transmission) is far superior to Audi's traditional 8-speed transmission. The gears transition quicker and smoother. One look at the vehicle's interior and you'll be reminded by the benchmark of sports cars (the 911). The combined effect of sport and luxury is magnificent. If you are in the market for a compact luxury SUV, the Macan is the optimal choice.The hurdle is getting one as they are (rightfully so) very difficult to come by currently at dealerships.

X4 looks just perfect as well. Both cars compare very well with all basically everything except for the price which why most will go for the X4.

Well u can't compare a Porsche with BMW. BMW Is good. But Porsche is one class higher. U should compare with Maserati.
