Can a BMW & Porsche off-road?! 😳

It’s time for the off-road challenge you didn’t know you needed… Until today!

We’ve got our hands on a BMW X3M Competition and a Porsche Macan GTS, and they’re about to go head-to-head over a series of off-road challenges to see which is the best performance SUV once you leave the tarmac!

So let’s see how these two compare. Starting with the BMW, it’s packing a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that can produce 510hp and 650Nm of torque. It’s equipped with four-wheel drive, weighs in at 2,010kg, and a new one will set you back around £89,000.

Then we have the Porsche. It’s equipped with a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 that’s good for 440hp and 550Nm. It’s a bit lighter than the BMW, at 1,960kg, and it’s also a bit cheaper, coming in at around £69,000.

Both cars have hill descent control, and the Porsche even has an off-road driving mode! But will that be enough to propel it to victory? There’s only one way to find out - LET’S DO THIS!

At the Porsche factory in Leipzig Germany where they manufacture the Macan there is an off-road testing facility that really tests its ability.

My '09 Cayenne GTS is remarkably capable off-road - I've taken it on some logging roads in the Montana mountains in winter, and up some washed out roads in the Colorado mountains (in addition to track day and being my daily driver). The air-suspension can increase the already decent clearance; and the locking differential, low gear, and traction control all make it work well in snow and gravel conditions - all using normal street tires. I still would not go bouldering with it, but I've been impressed with how well it handles whatever I throw at it. Just be sure to get the air suspension - it adds a whole new dimension to the vehicle.
