How to Stop Fish, Snails, and Shrimp from Escaping Your Aquarium

Quick 3-minute tutorial on how to keep your fish from jumping out, snails from crawling out, and shrimp from escaping your aquarium. Despite having lids and hoods on all my fish tanks, they always seem to find the smallest opening to sneak out! 😒 So here’s a couple of easy DIY tricks I use to prevent unnecessary fishy deaths.

Was considering getting a snail but I didn't like the idea of it escaping. I saw vaseline and velcro solutions and didn't really like either idea, but this is my first time hearing about mesh! Seems like the most obvious answer, haha -- thanks!

I used this idea with craft mesh and it’s great. I also love that the tank still “breathes.” Seems more natural than a completely tight cover.

OMG! Brillant! I work in a pet store and I constantly have people asking me how to stop their fish and snails from escaping, or people won't buy a snail (or jumpers) because they have a gap and don't want them to escape... I call it committing suicide and get odd looks from people all the time, but they really do!
Now I have a solution to share with people and its very cheap too! Thanks for this!!

Thank you! Definitely trying the mesh. One of my amanos that I just bought three days ago jumped out and died today on my counter. I temporarily put tupperware lids over the holes by the filter so his buddy doesn't get any ideas.

I had a hillstream loach make it out during the night a couple weeks ago. The hole was small but he still found it. I'm going to try some mesh in the future!

I just love your videos! I think you are the most informative person on aquariums! I'm going to try this. I have 3 tanks and all of them have live plants growing out of them but the one I have shrimp in, they must be climbing or jumping from that area at the back that has the plants because I find them dead on the glass.
