Samurai is such a broad term in peoples minds that we'd actually have to get down to the specifics of the battle and load out of the Samurai

Huh. I'd have expected a Samurai's access to long range weaponry, iron, and in their later stages even firearms would give it an edge over a Spartan using Bronze weaponry.

I think whether or not the samurai is mounted would be the deciding factor of that particular fight.

You should do a video about the amazing victories of “skanderbeg” an Albanian man who had fought against the ottoman’s and won many battles.

I think that’s a fair analysis. Though if are going using a samurai on foot using a yari spear, their armor will be far more advance by that point. And though a shield is useful against 1v1, having to hold your spear in one hand limits your ability to deliver the strongest strike you can and/or pierce through gaps in armor.

Also if we take the latest Spartans (circa 300BC) to the earliest samurai (circa 1000AD). That’s a huge gap in time where technology has advanced.

Nonetheless the Spartans compared to early samurai are a much more organized and disciple unit of soldiers, since early samurai fought in small groups with little cohesion and command, basically just skirmishes (later sengoku period samurai were organized though)

I’m curious how much of an advantage the samurai would gain from having access to iron and steel and whether that could help make up for their deficiencies. If they can rush into melee range and trust their armor to keep them safe from the Spartan spear, they might have a better chance at landing hits on the Spartan than you’d expect. Spartan armor had lots of open sections plus it was made of bronze, so a steel sword would be a great benefit.

Personally i don't like these 1v1s because we're talking about two different cultures from completely different eras and technology fighting each other.

we could put a modern soldier with modern equipment but without any guns and he could still win because of the body armor.

It is important, if any are future commanders of armies, to understand this idea. Individual strength of arms will not be a good showing of an armies strength.

the difference is, samurai practically wear shields. they’re a walking set of roofing tiles.

I mean taking away a samurais horse is like taking away a Spartans shield it was quintessential to their identity

Samurai would be able to simply use the power of mounted archery to win.

These kind of conversations are always reductive and I hesitate to contribute to any side:
1) Both the Spartans and the samurai are dictated by the exact period - the Spartans had an extremely brief golden period before their ideology and culture collapsed (probably because it was unsustainable and stagnant), meanwhile an Edo period samurai would likely have zero actual military experience and would be less competent than their counterparts from more turbulent periods.
2) Both are extremely distorted in history by successors who, rather than seek cultures to emulate, sought to turn ancient cultures to something they wish to emulate. This continues to this day with the original video being evidence that perceptions of Spartans are through rose tinted glasses (thanks 300). Same with the Samurai, of course, though ironically more to 80s American films.
3) Individualism is lost. Completely in favour of technology and equipment, meanwhile other micro-factors such as who has the element of surprise, terrain, temperature and diet is hardly ever discussed.
