You know the drill: finish your mixes and send them off to the Dark Lords of music mastering who do their thing. The Dark Lords always know best when it comes to the art of mastering. Or is that something we resign ourselves to because we just don't understand it? In this video, Cubase user Stuart Stuart talks about why he started mastering and when he incorporates the mastering process into his mixes. His mixes are proof that you can do everything in the box if you are prepared to apply yourself to understanding the sonic processes for market release.

I don't have a passive studio monitor. Should I buy one like his or YAMAHA NS-10M?

I don't even call it mastering anymore, i call it puzzling. when I need a certain kind of crisp and I know strings or basslines or kicks are going to be using headroom I just truncate eq from the start. I'm usingjust a slight mastering plugin like CLA mix down or mix centrix or vitamine to add glue, even use a slight of syntorus, then compress in soundforge with ozone.
