8K 240Hz Ultrawide is Here - Samsung Odyssey Neo G9

It looks like 4K could be a thing of the past because according to some new deceptive marketing it looks like 8K is finally here, and not only 8K, but apparently a new 8K ultrawide monitor is set to release soon which has me soooooo excit

EXCEPT IT DOESN’T. Now the monitor in question is the next generation odyssey Neo G9, and on paper this monitor looks absolutely amazing, and truly the increase in resolution will be a huge improvement to the display’s clarity, but in this video I'm going to explain why you absolutely should not wait for this overpriced monitor and why it probably won’t be as good as your hoping, but first let’s bend it over and take a long look at those specs.

So according to all the info and leaks we have so far the next gen Odyssey Neo G9 will likely be a 7680x2160 ultrawide mini LED display using a VA panel which should get up to 240Hz thanks to its new DisplayPort 2.1 connection. Additionally I'm sure Samsung will try and market this as a 2000nit display as well, and I'm sure they will technically be able to get at least one pixel to do that during a test pattern, but for actual usage that's also going to be complete nonsense.

So yes the specs look good, but first of all referring to this as 8K in any way shape or form is completely disingenuous, and either displays complete incompetence, or is an example of companies trying to trick you into buying something its really not, because not only is 7680x2160 not ultrawide 8K, buts its not even regular 8K. 8K is 7680x4320 (double the horizontal resolution on this display).

The worst part of Samsung’s ultrawide displays like the Neo G9 has been the horrific scanlines visible at 240Hz. I can personally attest to just how atrocious these truly are when running these displays at 240Hz, which is a real shame, and hopefully they can finally fix this issue, but year after year it comes back on every pretty much all new odyssey 240Hz displays Samsung puts out, and when were talking about 4K and 4K ultrawide resolutions these types of issues simply aren’t acceptable.

Also that's actually not even the worst part. The real worst part is I can almost guarantee they will use a hideous heavy matte finish which will be the cherry on top of absolutely destroying the image clarity. I mean honestly if you want to experience what a next gen Neo G9 will look like just place an LG OLED on a belt sander and smear vegetable oil all over the screen.

You might think I'm kidding, but I'm not. I can pretty much guarantee if you actually did that and placed it next to a neo G9 monitor you actually wouldn't be able to tell a difference in clarity or colors.

So there you have it, hopefully that helps you with your future buying decisions, but that's all for I got for today.

That resolution, size and curvature with even 60 hz would be exactly what I'm looking for. If the matte finish helps with glare resistance, that's even better. It's probably not for everyone, but for productivity, it's perfect.

Triple 4K Samsung Odyssey Neo G8's here 👍 Love 'em

I really like my Samsung Odessey Neo G8. I might have been in the 1% who got a good one, but the only scan lines I see at 4k 240Hz are in an Orange color. Everything else is rosy. I wish they could update the G8 to DP 2.1 with a Firmware patch, but I don't expect that is possible.

I love this guy's attitude towards monitors

Giving these matt coatings what they deserve

It's 7680 x 2160 = 16, 588, 800 pixel density.

True 8K is 7680 x 4320 = 33, 177, 600 pixel density.

So 33, 177, 600 minus 16, 588, 800 = 16, 588, 800 which means it's Dual 16:9 4K monitors side by side which is still impressive, I don't care if they say 8K or not because nobody cares about 8K anyways.

Damn I was actually excited about this monitor. Thanks for the brutally honest review

Wait, are you the owner of „graphically challenged“?

So it's 4k but based on the pixel density it's ultra-wide. You could do the math of the vertical and horizontal pixels it's also OLED. I use a Sony x95k in my living room with my 4090 and OLED is the way to go. Now the price of the new OLED G9 Might be $1600-$1800 MSRP.

Once you go ultra-wide you never look back the extra side view vs wasted vertical image is extremely nice especially in racing games or first person shooters.

I’ll stick with my neo g9 until they come out with a oled 240hz 4K g9

So it's 4k Ultrawide, double 4k. I have a Neo g8 4k 240hz and I do love it. I don't have any scanline issues. But to be serious even with my 4090 I can't get all games to hit 240fps 4k yet. This monitor format will be nice but its definitely too ahead of its time. We are probably 4 years away from utilizing it if we're lucky.

Yeah, I'm ready to test some new defective panels! Freesync flickering, pixel inversion, scanlines, bad pixels, clouding, ecc, ecc..

I've never cared about Ultrawide, I would rather have a 5k or 6k 16:9 panel. I would prefer a gloss finish over matte but I do have a neo g8 and it doesn't bother me nearly as much as I thought I would, the blacks are actually pretty good when you have your HDR dialed in. I also have not experienced scan lines so far, maybe the firmware has solved that.

i would be exited if my Neo G9 DWQHD monitor didn't have quality control problems

This ultrawide is basically just two 4k monitors next to each other. So I if I want an ultrawide that meats those minimum requirements with that refresh rate can you, The Display Guy, tell me what my other options are?

What would you call this then? 6K? I think it's hard to market something people aren't searching for. Technically is it not about pixel density rather than just the pixels? I think it's 8K cut in half vertically so would still be as sharp as a 16:9 8K screen.

2:18 I have an Odyssey Neo G9 and I honestly don’t know what tf you’re talking about. I have never seen any lines on my monitor ever

You haven't tested scanlines recently. They are practically invisible. You don't understand how 32:9 is immersive either but 2000 nits are not present, true and probably 2000 aren't needed. In the dark conditions around 700 nits are pretty enough. In the afternoon 1000 nits are mostly satisfying. 2000 nits would be better to have only in a very bright room.

I really don’t care about 8k. 28-32 inches 4K OLED 240hz is my dream monitor

I had the G8 for a few months and I absolutely hated it. That thing has more tricks than a hooker to pull off "HDR". I live in Dark Mode and those local dimming monitors cannot, I repeat, CANNOT show accurate, consistent colors across the screen. This local dimming garbage means color accuracy "depends" on what colors are beside it.

Absolutely unacceptable for a 1500-2000 monitor.. Or at least, unacceptable as an "upgrade" cause my PG279Q was really doing it's job well.

I returned that G8 and left a 1-Star review. Same price I got a PG42UQ and THAT is an upgrade for content consumption.
