If you have been diagnosed with fatty panic too much! I completely reversed mine in a few months. I went scorched earth on it and cut out red meat, alcohol, sugar, carbs, bread, basically everything that is bad for your body. I started doing intermittent fasting 16:8 and I started eating waaaay more vegetables and salads. All of my blood work numbers dropped dramatically and my last test all numbers were normal. I could tell a difference in my health in just 2 or 3 months when I started eating clean. I had already been exercising for years so I was a little surprised that I developed fatty liver as I was not big at all. I haven't drank soda or sugary drinks for years. I think it just built up over time from a bad diet and alcohol on the weekends (mostly beer). I feel so much better now that my liver is normal and I have a lot more natural energy. Anyway you have to change your diet and eat cleaner and you have to cut down on the alcohol. For sure you don't want it progressing to cirrhosis of the liver. That is not reversible.
Edit: For those wondering how I cut down on alcohol. I did it with non-alcohol beer. Some of them have a tiny amount of alcohol, like .05 but it didn't seem to affect anything and I limited it to 2 drinks at a time. At least I got the taste of beer and at parties I just brought my own in a cooler.

I had a fatty liver diagnosis a couple of years ago due to my blood work coming back with high counts. An imaging test showed it and once that was found, I went to work doing some investigating on how to reverse it. My downfall was sugar. Being that I quit smoking 30 years ago, I picked up a sugar addiction. Not good. I cut all desserts and sweets of any kind from my diet, went on a strict beans, greens, fish & chicken diet. Even my pizza is a Veggie pizza. Now I'm 70lbs lighter which is the weight I was 33 years ago when I got married and feeling fantastic. My "go-to" favorite dinner that I serve twice a week is my 4-Bean soup. I might also add the spouse, after seeing the weight fall off, joined me and lost the 50lbs. he gained after we married.
Dr. Taz, I'm behind you 150% with your suggestions. Just change your diet. 😉

I have had it off and on for 6 years. I have a family history of high triglycerides and I have them as well. I’m not considered overweight. The pain has been getting worse over the years. I have been on blood pressure meds since I was 30. I’m now 56. I am also borderline diabetic. I had gestational diabetes with my son.

Apart from staying away from sugar and alcohol, also make sure you get your lipid profile into shape. And if you have an abnormal thyroid profile, work on that too. And yes... exercise! If nothing else, just walk for 30 minutes in the morning and evening.

Edit: Ensure that you have your last bite 3 hours before you retire for the night. And fast for 12 hours between supper and the next meal.

Other research says black coffee and green tea are good for T2D and NAFLD, even in excess. Gotta wonder who's correct. Remember, our Surgeon General used to say cigarettes were harmless 😅

Well my BMI is 20 and I don’t drink, smoke, or consume sugar. Blood sugar is low. I developed a fatty liver after chemotherapy and possibly from all the Tylenol and supplements I have taken. I could lose 10 more pounds without getting into the underweight category. I eat all the foods you talk about on a regular basis. I’m even weird enough to consume raw garlic and onion simply because I enjoy them.

Its not about adding anything to your diet, its about eating a proper human diet of low/zero-carbohydrates.

Huh, excess caffeine?? I'm seeing observational studies which show an inverse association of fibrosis with coffee intake.

I'm pretty sure a combination of early onset perimenopause, and chronic high BP (probably due to anxiety) was what caused mine... My BMI is 21.5, and after blood work, and pain for quite a while - I was given imaging, and diagnosed with NAFLD.
I'm trying to work on losing the belly pooch that appeared the last 3 years, working out every day without fail, not particularly trying to lose weight, just shift the fat/muscle ratio.
Thank you for the tips! It wasn't even so much that I have eaten a terrible diet, but went through long periods of stress that I barely ate at all, (stress related, not ED related) so have some nutritional deficiencies that are in the process of being balanced out. Wishing for the best, I still don't feel well the last few years, but when the Hashimoto's goes undetectable on blood work, it correlates exactly with feeling better. So, working to manage that from flaring up, as well.

Thank you for this informative video, Doctor! My MRI came back with an enlarged liver (17 cm) and fatty liver. I am a female in my mid-40’s. I am not overweight, I don’t drink alcohol or soda/sugary drinks. I don’t eat gluten, and I do eat lots of fruit. My diet doesn’t have enough vegetables. I do take a lot of anti inflammatory medication. My liver enzymes are perfect. My cholesterol and blood sugar are normal and had always been normal.
What is required for the fatty liver diagnosis? Aside from decreasing fruit and increasing vegetables, is there anything else I can do? Are liver enzymes supposed to be impacted for this diagnosis or is the MRI itself sufficient enough?
