The lines on the capacitor are so it releases the pressure out the top safely rather than explode. Kind of like a "safety valve".

was leaning over a circuit when a 4700uF cap went off, straight into my face and mouth. Great experience, highly recommend.

I used to assemble burglar alarms and their accessories when a kid - during the school holidays, and loved it.

I accidently put a 100uF cap in backwards one day - in a light beam sensor unit. Small metal box, with 2 movable lenses and PCB in housing. It had been in briefly when the cap exploded. It destroyed the PCB, lenses and housing by spewing sticky electrolyte everywhere.

I was about 12yo - it was about 1970. And to this day, so far as I know, I've never inserted another electrolytic backwards.

I just realized the first one was a magnetic reed switch that needed a magnet nearby to close the circuit. I was confused at first.
