Lee Smolin is a theoretical physicist, co-inventor of loop quantum gravity, and a contributor of many interesting ideas to cosmology, quantum field theory, the foundations of quantum mechanics, theoretical biology, and the philosophy of science. He is the author of several books including one that critiques the state of physics and string theory called The Trouble with Physics, and his latest book, Einstein's Unfinished Revolution: The Search for What Lies Beyond the Quantum.

Hey Lex! Big fan of the podcast. I would love for you to get Donald Hoffman on the podcast. I know he isn't considered mainstream because of his conscious agent theory, but it is fascinating to me! I think he would be an excellent guest.

Lex, you have one the best podcasts out there. I just noticed the thumbnail for this episode is a photo I took. Thanks!

Oh man...PHENOMENAL. Lee Smolin is definitely my favorite physicist around. His books are works of art combining science, philosophy and history...
Is Fecund universe hypothesis ( Darwinian Universes ) and his Cosmological arguments ( nothing BUT the cosmos, sceptical of the Multiverse, Time etc ) are different from the consensus and in my opinion necessary.

I agree that Lee Smolin would be a great guest on Sean Carroll’s Mindscape. Smolin is quite low key but I think Carroll would be able to make it a discussion and not a debate.

Descarte's "full" version would not admit the existence of a brain. It is somewhat arbitrary to grant the existence of the brain but doubt the universe beyond the brain... re: "we have nothing to say about what nature would be in our absence" - does this imply that I have nothing to say about what happens to another person's brain in my absence? Isn't the real divide between *me* and everything else? Once one says "we" one has implicated the physical world in a potentially messy way.

Hey Lex, if your really interested in what's real, you should have Bernardo Kastrup on your podcast, would be an interesting discussion. Thanks! Love the show. Cheers.

Great questions, urgently philosophical. It shows that AI scientists should be equipped with the glasses of philosophy as a part of a genuine panoramic visionary mind.

We humans are that minuscule part of univers that has evolved in such way that has coscience and is asking not only for the other parts of univers, but for themselves. this has hapened in the last 100.000 years. For sure after another 100.000 year we will know more about univers and ourselves (if still alive). But the brain as the ultimate univers cannot know more about himself for the way it is evolved. so the title of this video is nonsense.

But if reality is really indipendent from our perception so God for instance is most realistic thing in this world

There is still much we humans don't know and will probably never know.

It may sound cliche, but if you smoke DMT, you definitely get the weird feeling, that something strange and completey different from the normal human perception/reality is going on.. and it feels very real, not like a hallucination at all. There´s the distinct feeling that some other dimension exists, that feels somehow alive, and indescribable.

We are questioning constantly what's real, what's our perception only and what's existing in our imagination and how all three make us who we are! :) Great discussion.

What's really real is beyond what our minds can comprehend.

Leave your brain and all knowledge behind, visit nothing and everything at the same time, and you will experience what is really real...

People who spend inordinate amounts of time posing that question probably have a problem with reality. Tough shit.
