It is possible to save string theory. Assume open strings to represent electromagnetism and closed strings to represent gravity. Thus open strings represent hyperbolic provagating equations. Closes strings would represent non propagating elliptic equations. This agrees with the fact that electrons don't have a hard center. Also note that Dirac eq. is elliptic and suitable for electrons, whereas the equations before that were hyperbolic and were producing massless particles.
