Our Wild Horse ESCAPED!!

The words NO horse owner ever wants to hear...

Jason pulled in the driveway, jumped out of the truck and said, “Our wild mustang is loose!!”
Instantly, my stomach dropped. Sure enough — Rooster, our 3-year-old wild mustang from the Twin Peaks HMA, had somehow gotten through the fence and was loose on the neighbors property... completely free. No gates to keep him there.
After spending the last 30 days building trust, working on haltering, leading, and basic groundwork, I could only hope that we had done enough to be able to catch him before things got dangerous.
This is the reality of working with a wild mustang... things don’t always go as planned.
How did he get out?
Would he let us catch him?
Or would all of our progress disappear in a split second?

Watch to see how it all unfolded...

As always thank you for watching!
God Bless!

We are sharing this video to show the importance of having your horses (not just mustangs) easy to catch and a relationship built. Things happen, if you’re a horse person then you know that for a fact! Lol but we do our best to prepare our equines and trust they will make good choices. Rooster jumped the fence but didn’t clear it (we show where in the video) with him being a very mindful horse this is not like him to leave his feed and jump out. He’s been turned out in the pasture only during the day for over a week when this happened and has only ran around the very first time we let him out, so our guess is he got spooked. We have cameras but not on this particular spot. A top Hotwire should solve the problem when they are turned out to pasture later this spring.

For those of you confused by the 6’ fence requirements from the BLM. Yes 6’ is required for unhandled mustangs. But it’s not something that’s required for life. He is really quite tame now so putting him in a lower fence was a choice we made to give him more room.

For those of you who were constantly asking when we would let him out into the pastures… we were waiting until he was tamed down and well halter broke and easy to catch just Incase this happened.

We are thankful he’s not more dinged up and hoping he learned he’s not as good of a jumper as he thought and the grass isn’t greener over there lol.

Seeing him walking up to you so calmly after possibly being spooked and slightly hurt shows how good you did with him and how sweet he is! So glad he's not seriously hurt.

Honestly in the beginning he looked like he was trying to figure out how to get back in. Yes it was heart stopping. So glad he’s ok.

Boy does Rooster love and trust you Alyssa. SO cool to watch him basically walk right up to you in a wide open field like that after such a short time. Also cool to see him just hanging out where he obviously felt safe. Love this guy!!! 👍🏻😎👍🏻

I've always been surprised that horses don't jump fences more often. They're certainly capable of it. My hunch is Rooster got all rowdy running around having fun and just went for it. He's such an adorable, curious young guy.

you would be surprised at how high a fence they can jump over. i have seen them jump a 6ft fence. i like how you are takin it slow and easy with him.

I've never had horses but I do know the awful sinking feeling when an animal who is a family member goes missing, even for just a short time. I hope you had a chance to sit back and de-stress after you got him back safely.

It's impressive that he stayed close. It's like he already understands that home is with you guys.

Way back in dinosaur days, I was driving home from school with a friend. A neighbor had a five ft fence for cattle. A big old bull was standing next to the fence, just munching on grass. Next moment he jumped right up and over that fence from a dead stand still. Never saw anything like it! Made me think of the nursery rhyme, “The cow jumped over the moon.”
But before I got my car, I had to walk a mile to the bus stop. Can’t tell you how many times I missed the bus because I stopped to catch a horse loose on our little dirt road. It was a cut through for traffic, so it was actually quite dangerous for the loose animals. Mom was not thrilled with choices, but I wouldn’t change them, lol.

This is a testament on how well he will handle the backcountry ❤ You picked a beauty who will meld right in with your mules. I envision Rooster will be the leader of the pack. Can’t wait to see how he does in the pasture with his newfound buddies AND on the trail. You have such a beautiful family.

Oh My gracious.... the situation was tense to watch, I can imagine your inner selves were racing with emotions. Your outer demeanors were so calm and gentle like. What a testament to your experience and overall character in handling this situation in making Rooster be calm and not to spook him. I'm happy to know he was not hurt by his little curious adventure.

Oh goodness what a shock to see Rooster on the wrong side of the fence. He's such a good boy coming straight to you Alyssa. Hope you are feeling better now 😊

I’m no horse person but when you turned him out into that pasture and you saw the way he ran in circles right to that corner where evidently he jumped over the fence. I’m glad he’s back that he didn’t wander away. You did great in what you’ve trained him already. He did you need to make a higher fence for the moment I was telling my wife possibly if you had poles with just ribbons and the sense of a line going across maybe a couple feet taller with ribbon something that would let him know that he couldn’t go over it. I don’t know. Glad he’s back. Sorry for your anguish. Love your show.
