Engine Oil Flush - With Results!

Recently I replaced the wet timing belt in this 2008 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi engine with an FAI Timing Chain kit from Lymm Engine Components.

Here's the kit I installed:

and here's a link to the install video:

As part of the install, FAI recommend using an engine flush to make sure the the new chain will last a long time. Here is their best practice document:

So to satisfy this I went ahead and flushed the engine oil in my car using Motul Engine Clean:

Once completed I replaced the oil with the correct grade of Morris Oil:

This video shows my process for doing the oil flush and some visual testing to see if it was worthwhile.

Preventative maintenance is always better than repair so don't skimp on those oil changes!

Thanks to my good buddy Leon from Bodgit and Leggit Garage for filling the screen with his cameo appearance:

10-20% of used oil remains in the engine which contaminates the new oil. I have done oil analysis and it shows wear metal contamination, additive depletion, viscosity decrease after the first 15 minutes. due to fluid mixing. This means added wear, shorter oil life. You can achieve a 99% oil exchange by completing a change/cheap filter, , run 10 minutes as you did, drain and refill with high quality oil and filter, a second time. Recycle the oil by using it in older vehicle, lawn equipment, or for a second flush at the next oil change interval. Many diesel trucks use by-pass filters to keep the oil relatively clean. Instead of using paper towels, you can use heavy stock, white paper, such as a blank business card and place two drops of oil on it. After a few days it will show the contents of the oil much better as it is absorbed and dispersed through the paper.

They run so quiet and so smooth those Diesels...I'd think the flush would be darker if it worked..We keep engine flush at work and the manager recons it's great stuff...I'm yet to be satisfied that any of that stuff works even after 40+ years of seeing it in action.

One of the best vid for 2018 yet. Bravo buddy and yes I have done engine flushes but I just substitute a a litre of transmission fluid and pray it doesn't blow up. LOL

Great video Jonathan with the comparisons of the oil at different stages! I was laughing my ass off when you stuck out your middle finger and what was funnier is that you didn't quite know how to put out that second finger again LOL. I would agree with you that there wasn't much different between the 15min run and the flush because you've kept the engine oil changes up to date. Oh, and I need to start opening up my oil filters because I've been missing a lot of tools lately LOL. Have a good weekend coming up!

Any time you can annoy Leon by doing a video I'll support it. :) As you know, additives always bring up many comments, but since we learned nothing in this video, you shouldn't get too many. LOL It was a fun video and a good reminder to change your oil regularly.

Very interesting result! Always wondered if a flush made a difference. What’s concerning is the stuff that came out of the oil filter...😉

I have never used a flush like this. Will have to check into it.

If the flush oil looks good then it means the engine was clean.

Considering how a labs oil analysis, with 4 tests ran would cost us in the U.S. like $120, I think this was a sufficiently expensive test already. All I can think of to change the test to learn more would be to do it again after 8k's of driving. This time do the flush then the 15 minutes of oil afterwards. You see, I'm thinking if the flush really does anymore than an oil change then you'll see a more significant difference...if not, then you've just satisfied warranty...but with an over-maintained vehicle that wasn't ACTUALLY necessary.

Just my thoughts. Up to you if you want to try this again.

LOL I think engine flushes are the mechanic's shops, equivalent of the "loading" car sales departments do . They offer car buyers extra under-body protection (all cars have now anyway), a special coating that will protect your paint finish forever (ask any sprayer if that's even possible) and the numerous "extended warranties" offered by used car yards. (try actually claiming on one!) I don't think anything gets done to the car, how would you tell anyway ? Lucky the oil filter caught that boot it could have thrown up a nasty flux capacitor error code, very expensive to fix. Great vid

I flushed 4 times longer the time standing on the bottle and flushed with new oil only twice before filterchange and refill new oil. Oil condumption stopoed and oil stayed "new the first 11 months. Only started to darken that time.12-13th month black. But 2 years after i had to abort flush and it was something i called close damaging my engine and oil consumption jumped up again.
Reason? Dont know. If the engine have taken the flush it could have taken or becsuse of other brand? The second time it didnt idle over the time standing on the bottle. And ive read about risks and consequenses. And now i got another car and spent 2 years wondering if i am going to flush or just change the oil. I have to regulary fill oil on it. And i wish to fill less like the Volvo i had after the successfull flush😊 therefor thoughts wondering thoughts out wondering thinking😂
