Re: fighting the comments : my friend had to give birth to a baby she knew had died inside her. She had to be induced, struggled to dilate fully, and struggled to deliver it (very painfully.) She had good medical care and supervision throughout her pregnancy and (obviously) gave birth in hospital. Hence the comment doesn't reflect humanising of the sheep, it reflects an ignorance of human obstetrics.

If we wish to humanise your sheep, 1 nurse to 10, 000 sheep!! Add into the mix the inborn propensity of sheep to just die that a few episodes of any sheep farmer will demonstrate, I'm only amazed they survive in such large numbers. Even accounting for the birth difficulty that may arise from the effects of human directed breeding, I bet your survival rates are better than that for the ancestor breed in the wild.

We just started kidding. (Cute baby video opportunities) Even when you are watching closely, there is still a grey window where you may have to decide whether to check or intervene or give the doe a little more time. Does progress at different rates. You don’t want to risk introducing bacteria by sticking a hand in unless you really need to. And younger ones sometimes need a bit more time to dilate etc. And other times they show no sign of distress but have triplets tangled up so they don’t even reach pushing stage.
