The Battle of Teutoburg Forest, 9 AD ⚔️ | Arminius' Great Revolt (Part 1)

Показать описание
It was a cold and wet September day, 9 AD. Mist and drizzle covered three Roman legions and their followers traversing through the dense and rugged Teutoburg Forest. Under the governor of the Province Germania, Varus, his officer, doubling as Cherusci chieftain, Arminius organised the trek towards the Roman winter quarters. The column stretched from the vanguard all the way to the baggage wagons in the rear. The long line slowly marched on. Nobody suspected thousands of hidden eyes among the leaves and trees, hiding under the cloak of nature, following their every move.

What followed is commonly considered one of the most decisive battles in history.

The Romans had taken several major disastrous defeats in its history and was able to bounce back without too much issue. This one however left such a haunting effect. It was a foreshadowing of what dangers lay beyond the borders of the empire

This is the first episode of a series detailing Arminius' Great Revolt. Similar to my series about the Mithridatic Wars.

Nice video, Liked your point about the tribesmen not attacking the fortified Roman camp. This really was a masterful ambush.

Best advice I can give...Check out other ancient battles channel's and then chose to do a series on little known ancient battles that they have yet to cover.

For instance I would like to see some battles from Rome's early Balkan battles such as the Dacia campaigns. Or Thrace. Thanks for the awesome content!

Arminius managed to inflict this crushing defeat on the Romans at the peak of their power. Credit to him.

An interesting topic would be, in my opinion, the siege of Numancia.

Very nice documentary! Thanks for all your efforts! I visited the ‚most likely‘ battlefield in 2009, since there was a nice exhibition. Here are my two cents: the teutoburger forest with its Hermanns-Monument is actually located 100km southeast of kalkriese. The Hermannsdenkmal is a monument located southwest of Detmold in the district of Lippe, in Germany. It stands on the densely forested Grotenburg, a hill (elevation 386 m) in the Teutoburger Wald (Teutoburg Forest) range. It was built where historians in the 19th century assumed the location of the battle. The first wave of attackers were the germanic cavallry serving in the roman army. They were very well trained and armed. The germanic tribes followed a ‚hit-and-run‘-tactic since roman infantry was superior. The wall in kalkriese has a couple of gates to allow an attack and a retreat. After the first attack it was a war of attrition for a couple of days in which the Romans perished. Numbers: definitely not 18.000 men since not all of a legions strenght went to campaign! 50-70 percent is a good guess. Rain: probably added by a roman historian Cassius Dio to explain how all this could have happened.

You did a great job with this - I hope to see the area/region to get a feel for what the attack must have been like.

I grew up pretty close to that hill in the south here called Kalkriese hill.
Below is a huge flat area but swamp back then.

The battle groud had been found by a british officer late in the 80 pretty close to the unification and berlin wall fall in nov 1989.
The then starting investigation lead to the building of a museum also targetin international visitor like from UK and The Netherlands with a lot of international and even netherlands and english content, books and flyers.
Now it is a spot of a lot of activies and parties at least in the pre covid era .

A great video for sure. The channel called "Invicta" did a wonderful series on what Rome did after their defeat at Teutoburg. It's really interesting.

Were trees felled onto the Romans? I know it happened in the movie, and in another battle with the Gauls, but I heard this seems to not be the case with Teutoburg.
