not really as you can till get super good, but you will take you longer and you will not be as good as the competitive athletes

I mainly train 2 - 3 days a week. I've got a family, my own business, do lots of traveling AND need the recovery time since I'm not 18 anymore. I compare my game to myself, and I find little victories to keep me motivated. The other week, an upper belt said I was making it much harder to get tapped (and only once during the entire roll). That felt great. Also, tapping the 240 lb guy in the same week felt great too. :)

I'm only 4 months into BJJ and a single stripe white belt, and train 2-3 days a week. However, I also do Crossfit 5 days a week and have done so for over 4 years. As I'm in my mid 50s, this is about my limit for recovery. I'm having the most fun I've had in decades and I have no issues with the slower path and if younger, more athletic pass me by as its my own journey. That said, I can't wait to get back in and rolling!

I actually appreciate the message. I train 2-3 times a week, I'm a casual/like to compete occasionally but nothing too serious. And I believe I am the weakest link at my gym, but this message brings me back to reality cause my training partners are on a different path.

It’s not a waste of time but definitely train more if you want to make some progress

Tbh i train every other day. I think in general everyone's body recovers differently. I'm a naturally great athlete (could dunk at 5 9) but for some reason throughout my life my body just never liked training 2 days in a row. I'd just get better output, mental clarity and performance with an every other day approach. Or one hard day, one easy. I know this may be controversial but I personally believe most young people are at risk of overtraining which typically results in burn out and injury. This has been my experience from other sports. In bjj a lot of injury's tend to happen when you go hard all the time.

Pacing yourself is better for the long haul.

This is all predicated on the assumption that the 5x a week guy doesn’t burn out or suffer sporadic or long term injuries..

I remember a higher belt wanted to do reps with me and he got mad because I asked a safety question and was slightly confused about which person's knee would get wrecked if one partner's foot was out of position. The guy just wanted to use me and had no patience to explain. Patience is supposed to be a trait martial arts teaches.

What about doing judo 2x per week and bjj 2x ? I shoot for that my thoughts are judo will make my bjj better and bjj will make my newaza better . Your thoughts ?

I used to train 5 times a week sometimes more but job got in the way, thers is nothing you can do, you wont keep up with competitors, but take a second to analize how much you have improved when you go lets say with a newer guy, my god is like rolling with a baby even if they are huge, but ill definitely be moving my "chips" to go again 5 a week, that also means i need more time in the lifting are, you need to be stronger and more athletic if you want to endure that amount of volume for sure.

Better to train 2 days a week then not at all. You’ll take longer to progress than some young bloke who can do it 5 days. I personally do 3 classes a week and open mat. I find this is better for recovery and my responsibility to my family.

3 times a week at minimum to progress. 2 times a week at minimum to maintain. Change my mind.
