🧙‍♂️ Does the Horn of Winter do anything? | ASOIAF Quaranstream

Inspired by my recent conversation with Aziz and Ashaya from History of Westeros, decided to take some time and look at the other amazing horn that will do astounding things in The Winds of Winter: The Horn of Winter. What is it, what do we know about it, does it exist, where is it now, and why is it important for the next book in ASOIAF? In this stream, attempt to answer those questions and more.

I never noticed before how similar the two horns are. Now my mind is blown.

I belive the Horn of Winter is with Sam, and that he'll use it against Euron, to create a defensive line in Oldtown, but instead causes earthquakes and tsunamis obliterating Euron's fleet.

Matt asked my biggest question: "Maura Lee, how?". Gurl must make bank! I love though how much support she provides to Matt, Robert, and other exceptional content creators we have in this fandom.

I just thought of this too. But maybe someone else has pointed this out. When copper burns, it gives off greenish yellow flames by the reaction. I don't think the bands are gold or bronze, but copper. Which explains the green yellow flames when they burn it up. It would look magical, but it's basic science.

I always assumed the little horn isn't working because it's chipped. I thought if they fix the crack it will make a sound and do something colossal. But linking it to the later attack by the Others is *super* interesting!! 📯

It's like this gag that you have a switch at home that doesn't seem to do anything, so your flip it up and down repeatedly, only to cut away to another part of the world where it's actually causing chaos 😅

My understanding of the horn in 2 parts theory is that 1) we have a broken horn, 2) "Brandon the Breaker" apparently broke something important enough that it was tied to his identity for life, leading to the conclusion that he may be the one responsible for breaking the horn. Then 3) Mance Rayder has been desperately searching for the horn 4) Mance is on his way to get access to the Winterfell Crypts, 5) the stone statues could conceivably be seen as giants from the earth (this bit not really being terribly crucial), and 6) if Brandon the Breaker did break it, it's conceivable that his part would have been kept with his grave. So put all the bits together, and it conceivably clears up a couple of mysteries and gives Mance's character arc the satisfaction of finding something of the horn, even if he didn't find all of it (and the "You didn't even really know what you were looking for" twist thrown in as a bonus).

I'm not 100% convinced, but I think it has possibilities. An alternate thing that I think could be interesting is if the timeline got a little mixed up, and actually at some point Joramun sacrificed himself to blow the horn with the aim of stopping the others (such as if it kills the blower to achieve its aims, similar to dragonbinder) and so the horn is a weapon that'll require someone to sacrifice himself to blow it at the right time, and that's why it had to reach Jon's hands. I think that has possibilities also, but it feels like it may be a little too on the nose as a mirror of dragonbinder.

Actually, turtles could be little vicious creatures. We had a couple once, presumably male and female. They lived in their little aquarium, with several plants and a little island to perch on. Soon, I noticed the alleged male was always spending his time "inland" so I kept pushing him in the water, hoping he will have fun swimming alongside his spouse. Long story short, one morning I found the little bugger floating tummy up with a broken leg and his neck slashed open. I still feel guilty for not getting he wasn't shy at all, just hiding from the beast.

A comment for the old gods.

I think another addition to this discussion is the story behind Sam's house, Horn Hill and its ancient founders - Herndon of the Horn & Harlon the Hunter

The conversation about experiencing earthquakes, and how scary powerful they are, hits so close to home: I was living in Kanagawa Prefecture in Japan on March 3, 2011. The earth DGAF

The horn that wakes the sleepers:

The Lord Commander had holes hewn in the top of the Wall and he put the deserters in them and sealed them up alive in the ice. They have spears and horns and they all face north. The seventy-nine sentinels, they're called. They left their posts in life, so in death their watch goes on forever.

Would be so cool if the horn isn't meant to be heard by living people but the dead. So if you blew it near a Wight it would "wake" and remember it's former self. Would be a nice combination of "horn that wakes the sleepers" and horn of winter.

I think the Horn attracts the White Walkers etc to it. The reason the dragonglass items are with it is so that the owner of the Horn can effectively hunt Winter with all the weapons that will aid in killing the Others.

Waking the giants of the earth could be a metaphor for an earthquake.

Blowing it lets the Walkers through. It brings down magic of wall bc wall was meant to keep White Walkers out, not the wildlings, a nuance that was probably lost. A thought.

I think it should bring down the wall. If not, I want to know that what was Others' grand plan to cross the wall? There seems to be a magical barrier there as well as icy barrier, and they can't cross that. I think it at least disables the magical barrier. And about its whereabouts, I think it is the one that is with Sam now, for multiple reasons (Sam of "horn"hill, old gods helping Jon find the horn through Ghost, Others actively going after Sam who carried the horn, Mel seeing the greatest blow of Others falling on a port with high towers - that she mistakes for eastwatch- which is probably Oldtown which is where the horn is right now, etc) but whether Sam himself blows it in desperation or Euron blows it to bring down more destruction on westeros and start a new era in which he is the god, not sure.
