Can I just take the old mounting hardware, from the shock I already run?

Good stuff! That is some seriously important stuff to know if you are trying to get a different shock on your bike. Quite the learning curve with this MTB stuff!

I upgraded my SC Bronson from a Fox Evolution POS rear shock to the DVO Topaz last year. I struggled for a bit trying to understand the mounting hardware but eventually came to realize my Fox hardware would fit the Topaz. Although I ended up ordering a RWC needle bearing kit for the Topaz. So far the easiest shock ever to do a complete rebuild on, and it requires no special tools. Then too, it's like Prince sang in Lil Red Corvette, "The ride is so smooth". Get you some.

If that's just the basics, I'm screwed already.

The hardware is very cross-compatible on modern shocks:

I have a RockShox Monarch Plus RC3 that has been installed with full RS hardware, full Fox 5-piece (poly bushing) hardware, and RS spacers with an aftermarket poly bushing and an aftermarket reducer (for custom offset).

I've also used old Fox 2 piece and 5 piece (DU bushing) hardware and full RS hardware, as well as new Fox 5-piece (poly bushing) on Fox shocks.

If your shock was made in the last 5 years it'll have the 1/2" by 1/2" (12.7mm by 12.7mm, diameter by width) mounting point that everyone uses. If it was made in the last 10 years, 95% chance it'll have the same, with some small exceptions that used 12mm hardware.

Can I measure my existing shock while it’s on the bike or do I have to remove it for a more accurate measurement?

Can you use previous hardware to mount

Do you need new hardware when you're replacing an existing shock? if so why, b/c it's assumed to be worn out, or it's 1 X use hardware? Just curious, thanks!

Thanks so much. Just picked up a used bike with a rattle + play on the top connection with the frame. Wondering what sort of hardware. No way to post a photo here eh?
