"Lampreys are vampire wannabes"

Lamprey: I have been around for millions of years, wtf do you mean

One of the most terrifying stories I've ever heard was of a man doing long distance swimming training in Lake Ontario. He was way out in the lake hundreds of feet from shore and a lamprey stuck itself to him mid swim. So he stopped and managed to pull it off and toss it a few feet. So it just zipped right back to his leg and attached itself again. The guy had to quickly choose between fighting/potentially drowning or keeping the thing latched on and digging into his flesh while he swam back to shore. He kept it on his leg and made it. Holy crap that gives me chills. Life or death scenario eh

And all i can think about is "What we do in the shadows" with the opening music :D kinda fitting with them being "vampires" . can see why they picked it :D

Controversial Opinion: Lampreys are some of the most terrifying animals that currently exist. Honestly, a video about them should have been made around Halloween instead of Christmas.

I suffer terribly from insomnia .
This, in no way whatsoever, helped.

Gross story about these things.

My grandfather grew up in rural Québec. One day he decided to go to the creek on the edge of his grandparents farm when he was about 8 years old. He then encountered a dead moose sitting in the creek and decided to do what any 8 year old boy would…

He poked it with a stick.

Suddenly, the whole moose deflated and lampreys came pouring out of the corpse from all orifices.

He never went to that creek ever again. 😂

The way they open their mouth is "OH HELLO WHAT IS THAT" levels of unsettling. I wasn't ready for that.

I live in michigan and had no idea I've been swimming with these feckers for all the years of my life... I think I woulda been happier without this knowledge :' )

In the middle ages, lampreys were a delicacy too, and I think it's still is, in some parts of France.
There was even an english king, Henry Ist, who died aftereating too much grilled lampreys :p

I'm still surprised there isn't a massive demand in the Great Lakes to eat this creature: They taste more like red meat than any other fish on Earth, which means they should be MASSIVELY popular in America.

Great presentation as always, Danielle! Your illustrations and presentations make the subject matter always interesting. Thanks again and Happy Holidays to everyone.

i think a feature that is overlooked is the fact that lampreys gills arent just slits along the throat but instead completely seperate breathing pouches unlike literally every other fish. this lets them suction their face for long feeding sessions without choking

That video of the person with all of the mosquitos on their feet was the scariest part of the whole video

First and only time I’ve ever seen a lamprey was in the white river here in north central Arkansas. Great video as always

They're kind of cute with those googly eyes on the side of their heads. :3

It’s nice to see Danielle again!! I love all the other series too, but I have a soft spot for Danielle and I always miss her when we go weeks and weeks without seeing her 🥲

Oh that scene of the feet covered in mosquitoes is all kinds of wrong 😳
I keep wanting an episode about the short tailed shearwaters and their migration. But deep sea creatures are also very unique and interesting.
