March 1st, 1971, John Richard Deacon became the fourth and final member of Queen, as history recounts it, not only because he was a brilliant bass player, but he was also quiet and didn’t try to upstage the others. John Deacon is very much the mystery man of the Queen story. Yes, he was the one who wrote tracks like "I Want To Break Free" and "Another One Bites The Dust".

The closest to him in the hand was of course Freddie.
FREDDIE MERCURY'S friendship with John Deacon was based on trust and support. There was so much more to it than that and John also proved his intense loyalty to Freddie. But his untimely death shook John and then things were never ever the same.

Wow, this is not a ‘sad story’ at all. It’s the story of someone who walked away with dignity after his close friend died. I absolutely respect John Deacon, as a musician, songwriter and most of all, someone who knew that Queen without Freddie is not Queen at all.

Why can't people just leave him alone? He retired when Freddie died, because he believed no one could replace him. Couldn't agree more.
He deserves his privacy and peace.
His grief over Freddie must have been immense.

Nothing sad about retirement. His choice and we should respect and accept that. I would like to thank the guy for his contribution

Much respect for this man. He gets nothing to prove, and now is living a peaceful life with his family. I admire him so much. God bless you John.

Jeez. Leave the guy alone. He has his family, memories and wealth. He needs nothing but the privacy he wants. He has earned that and we should respect it.

He didn’t “leave the group at the height of their fame”. He left when Freddie died.

There is absolutely nothing sad about John Deacon. I salute him for not wanting to be part of Queen after Freddie passes away. Just as I respect Brian and Roger for trying to go on. There is no right or wrong. But please stop putting him down as a sad person. Instead applaud him for being a great musician who gave us years of great songs and music.

The only sad part is of course the loss of his dear friend, Freddie and I agree with him in saying Freddie can never be replaced. Neither can you sweet John. You're

I'll save you 7 minutes. Freddie's death hit him hard. He believed that Queen Without Freddie really wasn't Queen at all so he retired. End of story

He took the death of Freddie very hard and he believed that He could not keep going with Queen after Freddie’s passing. His last participation with Queen was back in 1997.
He was a talented bassist and song writer. I hope he is keeping well.

John was always the quiet one, I guess when Freddie died he found it hard to carry on . He made a personal decision, which should be respected . Thank you John for everything you gave us all .

If I ever met John in passing on the street. I would never ever think of asking him for his autograph or hounding him like people do (to make money - cretins) I'd simple say thank you for everything you did with Queen, and go about my day.

So, where's the sad story? John Deacon found the right moment to say "it's over". Most artists don't. Lucky John Deacon.

Not a sad story, John Deacon is probably the happiest of the band. He lived his dream, and now is living his life in peace. He doesnt need the fame and constant validation from the press. Hes the best of the bunch

I must have missed the sad part! God bless John Deacon. He owes the public nothing. May he live out his life with his family in peace and prosperity. Same to the other guys. As bands go, one of the nicest group of guys. R.I.P. Freddie, who is missed so badly by so many.

For me, it is a story about how to be completely successful. You played in the best band in the world, you created a lot of hits, you made a fortune, and now you enjoy it with your family having peace of mind. Master.

John Deacon wrote the 2 most famous bass riffs of all time. Under pressure and another one bites the dust. Unbelievable talent.

The guy has retired from a fruitful work and career, devoted full-time to his family, financially stable, and - best of all - without the tension and extreme social pressure. This is actually a success story.

He's smart. There's more to life than playing in the band, and he's right, there's no replacing Freddy.
