A discussion on The Awakening by Kate Chopin. I'm aiming to make reviews much more of a regular feature here, so hopefully I'll get better at the, eh?!

Thanks for watching!

This is actually one of my favorite novels! I had been waiting for someone on Booktube to review it, so thank you!
I think the muted aspect of it is what I enjoyed the most. I agree that at surface-level, perhaps there isn’t much tension or anything wrong with the life Edna lives, but it’s the invisible injury of the world she lives in that feels all the more painful in those final moments.
I haven’t read this in about 7 years, so it may be due for a reread. I think the passages that struck me the most were, curiously, those of Edna wishing to have a fish dinner towards the end, and I think “hunger” is an excellent way to describe her situation: Hunger is invisible, might not seem like a great ill in a broader context, but it still lingers and hurts.

I remember The Awakening. When I read it, I found it SO DEPRESSING, but quite an interesting read. I enjoyed your discussion here.

I read this in undergrad. I remember liking it, though I thought it was a little surreal in some ways for me for the paper I was writing about it. Maybe that's just how I was reading it at the time. I may want to reread it at some point hearing you talk about it. I'm wondering if Anne Bronte's _The Tenant of Wildfell Hall_ was an influence on this book. It has a very definite feminist character that leaves her husband.

Nice review man! This book is so interesting for its time. It had to have been a first to focus on this side from the female perspective!
