Kids be like "I already know this. Why do we keep doing it?" it's because it's a workout routine. Back when I was being introduced to math, it was on par with general facts and learned skills. Nobody talks about it like it's exercise.

I'm an ESL teacher and this is pretty much exactly the speech I give to my students on the first day of the semester. You ain't gunna learn to magically speak English if you're just sitting there listening to me answer my own questions, ya lazy bastards.

Some other stuff I say on the first day:
Can you imagine a math student too afraid to try a new math problem? A person trying to learn the guitar by listening to people play, but who refuses to pick up a guitar and play some horribly fingered chords?
Finally, I tell them that if you like languages, but you don't like communicating with people, try the computer science department, rather than the applied English department.
