MOFI 4500 hot-spot how to speed it up! Better Antenna and YES Aluminum Foil! Rural Internet Service

How to get a faster internet connection when you live in the country. I review the MOFI 4500 and show you how I have managed to squeeze some extra speed out of it.

Aluminum Foil: Your Kitchen Pantry
Metal Coat Hanger: closet
Old Tripod - allows complete directional control
Clamps for your clothes hanger supported aluminum enhancer

The Sim card for this unit must be purchased as a "hot-spot" from AT&T, Verizon, or some other carrier.

Before adding the MOFI 4500, I was locked down with DSL and my fastest upload speeds were 750 KBS!!! I used to upload my YouTube videos overnight because it took soooo long.
I realize that these aren't "city speeds" BUT, if you live in a rural area, it's a game changer!

Thanks for watching as always, and I hope you found this helpful! You can use it as a mobile hot spot when on vacation and ignore the criticisms and jokes, make your own aluminum radius shield/enhancer.
Notice the home-wifi antenna positions at the end of the video... If you put one vertical and one horizontal, the signal reception is stronger at your other computers, laptops, or phone... so set those antennas at 90 degrees to each other and you'll see the difference.

WOW!  I already average between 70 and 80 mbps with my MOFI, but you better believe that I will be trying this little trick!

Nifty! Just got a mofi myself since I also live in the sticks. Definitely going to try the aluminum foil trick 👍

I'd highly recommend getting a couple of outdoor wide band yagi antennas and mounting them on your roof. I tested the mofi with the included antennas, and by adding the external ones it increased the speed from 2 to 20mbps. Its especially nice because most 4g plans don't charge based off of your speed.

Interesting and I'm sure the different antenna helps. One thing i noticed was in your different speed tests you had different sites you were connected to. That also changes your speed . Try to use the same host for each variation .

I got the new Mofi 4500 a week ago. Using AT&T the tower is less than a mile from me. I get around 20 to 25 down. Using one band my signal strength is around -90 and I think that is good but my signal quality is -11 to -15 and I think this is my issue. The tin foil didn’t work for me and I have looked for other antenna as well. I have my Mofi sitting in a window. I have tried advanced band locking combinations and one band worked best for me. Everyone’s location is different so you have to play with it. I am in a big city so it might just be traffic for me but I know I should get better signal quality. I understand anything above -12 can cause issues. Thanks for the post. We need a place we can all figure this stuff out.

Thank you for sharing your Idea! When all else fails with signal issues or anything for that matter, use aluminium foil, Its great to cook with aswell leaving less mess. It does wonders for antennas/rabbit ears especially in rural areas, I luv your modified idea creating high speed internet. It would help prevent dropped calls regarding ph service, Wi-Fi has helped but your idea sounds very helpful in picking up the 4G tower signal. I also live in a rural area of TN on a sm farm & wouldn't trade it for anything! My sweet bees are doing very well here in their new cedar homes & have quadrupled in size since gettin them early May, im expecting to have honey on tap at the rate my girls are working. I did add a 2nd brood to help build their colonies plus this will help provide as their food source come winter. I had to add the 3rd story/ supers a few days ago, 20 day's after the 2nd brood was needed. I can see them being very productive through the vewing windows. Im amazed at how well both 3 story hives are doing in less than 2 months time. "Sorry, Ive drifted off a bit giving you a update as a newbee to my bee keeping experience.. I'm the gal who left you the longest comment ever regarding a video you shared, it helped me in choosing to use the queen excluders which I did ontop of the 2nd brood then added the supers to both. Thank you for that aswel." Back on track.. High-speed internet has been a issue along with having a 4G ph living in a 3G service area. I had to resort to satellite TV & Hughesnet aswell for internet. Nothing else is available in this beautiful rural area where I choose to move back over 26 yrs ago after being born in the country in 1962 then raised in a city. It seened to be the best place to raise my kids who are both now grown. My son with his wife & my only grandbaby, @ 5 weeks old which she's absolutely precious, live in the rural area aswell about 15 mins away. My daughter & my youngest of the two on the other hand perfers the convince of the city, although she misses the rural country life back home in TN. She's 8 hrs N of home between Chicago & Michigan City not far from Lake Shores. Her significant other along with her career stuidies is why she moved. With 2 Asso degrees by age 24 followed by a immediate Job opportunity nearing 4 yrs ago has given her the job experience needed along with several medical certifications & promotions.. She's now hoping they move back South, North Georgia is on their minds, living somewhat on the edge of rural but close enough for convince. I've suggested the quaint town of Austell Ga after living there, it would be 4 hrs closer to home than her current situation. Luckily her career choice is a highly sought out profession. This probably doesn't break the record for the longest comment, maybe a close 2nd. As always, thanks again for sharing helpful video tips! 😊

Fred, I was curious to know if you have tested band locking on any of the different bands? I was looking at getting this router specifically because of that. Thanks!

I also live very very rural and needed fast speeds all the time. My solution was to put a parabolic antenna on the roof and hook it to my MOFI . I got a 23dbi from zda communications and my life changed. 35mpbs down and 25mpbs up 24 hours a day 7 days a week rain or shine!!!! It’s been 2 years now and the speeds are

I just took a strip of foil and hang it on my antenna, just dangling there, instantly increased download from 50-60% to 90-100%

How do I find a good list of towers and the bands they operate on in my area?

Awesome video...thank you... Also, do you call WiFi “Weefee” like you call MoFi “MoFee”...lol

You have faster internet than I do and I live in the suburbs! Then again, I only pay for 3 mbps download and 2 mbps upload. Haha!

I cannot tell from the video, but is the cell tower you are trying to hit on the convex side or the concave side of the aluminum foil? It almost looks like the "dish" of aluminum foil is pointed away from the window there. Thanks!
