Disastrous local elections for Tories as Starmer 'on course' to become PM | ITV News

The Tories have so far suffered disastrous results in the local elections, with Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer now predicted to become the next prime minister.

Rishi Sunak's first electoral test as prime minister has not gone well so far, with the Conservatives expected to realise their "worst fears" of losing over 1,000 seats.

The full picture may not be known until Saturday as councils race to count the votes, but even at this early stage, it is clear the party of government is "some way behind Labour", said ITV's Elections Analyst Colin Rallings.

One thing is a bit confusing for a Yank though - Your Labour party is the red party, and your Tories are the blue party. Here, the conservatives (Republicans) are red & the Democrats (less conservative) are blue.

I'm happy to see the Tories trounced. But I don't rejoice at the sight of Starmer's face either.
The result of local elections has never been a reliable prediction of a general election.
While I hope and pray Starmer as PM wouldn't be as incompetent and criminal as the recent stream of Tory PMs (hardly possible) I really do suspect he'd just be another Blair.
We all need to be careful what we wish for...

These council elections are first and foremost only been held in England. Secondly, council elections are notorious for being used as protest votes and rarely reflect the outcome of a general election. Certainly, there is a lot of disgruntlement against the Tories and rightly so, but Starmer isn't exactly enthralling and the LibDems are practically unknown other than the fact there is a party called 'The Liberal Democrats'. The future of politics in the UK has as dismal an outlook as the past 14 years of Tory rule. The electorate will quickly realise post the next general election that all that has happened is that they have swapped problems. The country needs real constitutional reform if politics in the UK is to be rejuvenated. Otherwise, it will be continuation of the present, just with different characters and Labour swapping seats with the Tories and rinse and repeat.

The problem with elections is, a politician always gets in.
They may say things in a slightly different way and have a different favourite colour but...
when they get control, it's just more of the same failed policies, lies, corruption and mediocrity that has just left.
