Ireland's colonization by Britain is a complex tale woven through centuries of conflict, politics, and cultural shifts. The roots of this colonization can be traced back to the late 12th century, when English King Henry II claimed sovereignty over Ireland, aiming to assert control and spread Christianity. This initial foray set the stage for centuries of domination.

Throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, England intensified its efforts, driven by a desire for land, resources, and power. The English crown implemented policies of land confiscation, pushing Irish landowners off their ancestral lands, and settled English and Scottish colonists in their place. This led to significant social and economic upheaval for the Irish people.

The Protestant Reformation further complicated matters, as England sought to spread Protestantism in a predominantly Catholic Ireland. This established a deep-rooted divide, fueling resentment and resistance among the Irish. The infamous Cromwellian Conquest in the 1650s exacerbated these tensions, leading to widespread suffering and displacement.

By the 18th century, cultural suppression and discriminatory laws aimed at the Irish Catholic majority solidified British control. The Great Famine in the 1840s further illustrated the devastating consequences of colonial rule, as millions suffered while British policies prioritized export over local needs.

In conclusion, Britain's colonization of Ireland was driven by a mix of political ambition, religious conflict, and economic exploitation. This tumultuous history has left a lasting imprint on Irish identity and continues to shape relationships to this day.

The colonisation of Ireland wasn’t just an English thing the Scots were heavily involved too. In fact the Scots are the main power in the UK. The English fear, loath, love and respect the Scots at the same time because of their ability to wield power over the island without appearing to do so. They took over the crown of England unified the country but kept the capital in London. Perhaps if they had moved it to Edinburgh things would have been different. But as a historically dominant minority you will always fear and respect the Scots. The Scots were the chief builders of the British Empire not the English, they were the ones who travelled far and wide and founded the colonies, set up trading posts and explored the great rivers of Africa. Their influence is strongest in major countries of the Anglosphere especially North America, New Zealand, Ireland, South Africa and Nigeria where they played key roles as settlers and/or colonial administrators. They did so on behalf of the crown which often led to the English taking the credit when actually the Anglo Saxons sat on their fat county assess not doing much travelling or exploration. In fact research shows that the average English man barely moved from their native homestead, so while Ireland, Scotland and wales emptied out due to emigration to the new world. Very few Englishmen did. They would only migrate as slave plantation owners or as teachers, clergy and senior colonial administrators. That is why you rarely find people claiming to be English American or English Canadian in ancestry etc. Their famed conservative and inward looking nature is partly to blame for England being more xenophobic. The only three things that can make the Englishman budge an inch is the Dordoigne in France and the Costa del Sol in Spain
