Wow. As someone who grew up in the Anglican church and recited the Nicene creed, I never really knew why it was recited. Thank you Pastey for this teaching.

Day 73 — The Purpose of the Council of Nicaea

The Council of Nicaea, convened by Emperor Constantine in 325 AD, aimed to address the growing divisions within Christianity, particularly concerning the nature of Christ. The main debate was between those who believed Jesus was of the same divine nature as God and followers of Arius, who argued that Christ was a created being distinct from God. Constantine, seeking unity in the empire, did not push a political agenda but instead facilitated a resolution.

The council ultimately condemned Arius’s teachings as heresy and affirmed the full divinity of Christ, leading to the formulation of the Nicene Creed.

DAY 73. 100DOD
THE PURPOSE OF THE COUNCIL IN NICEA | CHURCH HISTORY III
Constantine saw christianity as a uniting faith for all his people which was politically and after the persecution and the Hiddict of Milan, the Christians saw something new to find about which was the Arius teachings.
Arius came up with a theology that Jesus was not God but a created being and he was in constant battle with Alexander and so Constantine was worried that doctrinal disputes will cause problems with the people.

And so when they came together, the deity of christ was only the issue talked about, and the people who believed Jesus is God and those who didn't, i.e. two major groups
And so a creed was birthed "The Nicene Creed" - which is the belief in one God and three was established.

But Constantine had political motivations and not still happy that a camp denounced the other and became sympathetic to the Arian view and wanted Arius to be received back to the church but he died before it could happen and he ended up changing his views to Arius' view [Arianism]

Orthodox Christian view prevailed because the bible teaches the deity of christ and early church fathers thought the same which was long established before the Arian view

DAY 73
THE PURPOSE OF THE COUNCIL OF NICEA(CHURCH HISTORY PART 3)

-After the EDICT OF MILIAN and Christian persecution had stopped, the Christians moved on to fight over doctrines
-One of the leading doctrines was that ' Jesus was a created being and therefore not God', by a man called ARIUS
-He was in constant dispute with ALEXANDER OF ALEXANDRIA

-Constantine worried that this dispute would divide his kingdom, and then called together the council of NICEA
-About 1, 800 were called, but only about 200 showed up. (The remainders, maybe for fear of previous persecution)
-The only subject discussed in the meeting was 'THE DEITY OF CHRIST'
-And there were two different kinds of people in the meeting: Those who Believe Jesus was God (homologous) and those who didn't believe (Heterologous)
-After sharing their doctrinal evidence, the Orthodox view that 'Jesus is God' was established' and they came up with the NICEAN CREED (Establishing the DEITY of Christ and the belief of One God in 3 persons)

-Note that the primary purpose of Constantine calling for the meeting was political, and so he was sympathetic to ARIAN view, for they had relocated to another territory for the unacceptance of their view
-CONSTANTINE wanted to bring back Arius to persuade the church to readmit him, but Arius died before then
-He later changed his view to ARIAN, cause Arius had remodeled his position to make it more acceptable.

-What made the Orthodox view prevail in that council was because the Bible teaches the DEITY of Christ, The Early church Elders taught it as well and the Arian view was just only a New view.

The Nicene Creed establishes the deity of Jesus Christ. The Trinity was established in the council of Nicea not as a new doctrine rather, it was putting it forth as the true teaching of the word of God in orthodox christianity. What made the orthodox view prevail on the council was that the Bible teaches the deity of Christ and the early fathers taught the deity of Christ. Thank you Pastey!!! It keeps getting better, thank you the clear explanation as well.

I remember reciting the Nicean creed as well as the Apostles creed at mass as a catholic and also attending a catholic school. I guess a lot of us just used to recite these words mindlessly without knowing how powerful those confessions were and about its origin. Thank you Pastey

God bless you, pastor, thank you for this topic. Everything you have taught about this church's history is very accurate. I grew up in the Anglican church, my Father is an Anglican Priest and I learned these histories from my father, from the seminary, and from my research in my teenage years. And that is exactly what you are teaching. I believe the church history is what every believer of Christ should know. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't know this.

I'm pentecostal, but since I learned the apostles and nicene creed in secondary school, I still recite them to remind myself what I believe. And though I obviously will still know what I believe without them It's somewhat nice to have a creed that states its clearly.

And I'm thinking the next time people ask what I bele8ve I'll recite the apostles or nicine creed. It's a very comprehensive answer

Thank you. Agree with you that we as Christians must learn church history for ourselves. There's so much junk out there trying to twist the truth to discredit Christianity.

I got to know about the council of Nicea from DaVinci code by Dan Brown.

Watching this video just made me realize I need to study more on church history.
Thank you Pastey.

As one that was born into a Catholic home, I used to recite the Nicene Creed at every Mass.
Now I understand the origin.

Thank you so much, Pastey.

This is so enlightening!

Grew up in the Catholic Church and recited the whole creed as Pastey read through. Catholics recite it everyday, either that or the Apostle’s creed, which I think is a shortened version of the Nicene.

Thank you for this lesson Pastey🙏🏽
