How Coca-Cola originally started
Originally named French Wine Coca, Coca-Cola was first advertised as a brain tonic to cure headaches and tiredness in 1886 when it was invented by pharmacist John Pemberton.
Pemberton claimed the drink would aid "scientists, scholars, poets, divines, lawyers, physicians, and those devoted to extreme mental exertion" in an 1885 interview with the "Atlanta Journal."
Pemberton's French Wine Coca, which was promoted as a patent medication, was said to have incredible medical effects. However, the United States, particularly the Deep South, banned alcohol. Pemberton was inspired to create a drink for individuals who were abstinent due to this, and he took out the wine content and replaced it with carbonated water. But the drink tasted so bitter. That's why he added so much sugar.
After taking out the wine from the drink, he continued selling the French Wine Coca, but he had to get a new name. His bookkeeper came up with Coca-Cola. However, the business eventually claimed that the name Coca-Cola had no meaning.
Soon after, Pemberton desired his son to make money from the company, but Charley Pemberton proved to be a headache.
Asa Candler advertised his wholesale and retail pharmacy firm as "sole proprietors of Coca-Cola... Delicious. Refreshing. Exhilarating. Invigorating". Mr. Candler paid $2,300 for exclusive possession, which he did not accomplish until 1891.
According to further investigations, Candler may not have purchased all of those shares since some of the paperwork had fake signatures. We may never know precisely what happened since Candler had the company's early documents burnt, most likely to hide his tracks. But none of it mattered since, by the 1890s, Candler had taken complete control of Coca-Cola. But keep in mind that the drink wasn't always popular. As a result, Candler began to plaster the town with Coca-Cola-branded banners, billboards, and posters. They even painted the Coca-Cola logo on barns and essentially plastered it on whatever they could, so people began seeing it everywhere.
Mr. Candler's marketing skills had almost tenfold increased Coca-Cola syrup sales by 1892. He quickly sold his pharmaceutical company and concentrated all of his efforts on soft drinks. Mr. Candler founded The Coca-Cola Company in Georgia with his brother, John S. Candler, John Pemberton's old colleague Frank Robinson, and two other collaborators. The first investment was $100,000.
