This is why I love JRE - this information isn't anything new, but Joe still is attentive and respectful and lets the guy talk and break stuff down for people like me who haven't watched any of the documentaries and stuff on Coke's history

Now we know the cocaine in coke was safer than the sugar.

I had Bartow as a professor a few years ago for history. Growing up it was always my least favorite subject, but he made it so engaging and it ended up being one of my favorite classes I took in undergrad. Great to see him on here now

True story: I once told a teacher that cocaine used to be in Coca-Cola when I was a child and she shouted "that is NOT true." My favorite Coke story is about the "White Coke" made to look like vodka for the Russian General Zhukov in the USSR where it was prohibited.

This guest wrote several books on Coca Cola and really knows his stuff, Joe having a guest discuss their expertise is a main point of the show. A lot of haters that clearly didn't watch the whole episode or know who the guest is are acting like Joe is the expert here.

Bartow Elmore was my History professor a few years back in 2014. He was such an intersting guy - Loved his class! He brought DJ equpiment in and scratched records for us on the last day of class after finals.

Damn, a lot of smart asses over here. If this ain't news for you, it's definitely news for lots of other people. Joe's podcast is for everybody. That's why I dig when he talks UFOs and ancient history. It gets the otherwise unwise thinking.

Wait till he finds out there's meth in Pringles. Once you pop, you can't stop.

Even if his stories arent as exciting as he makes em out to be, its his enthusiasm and love for the material which makes it entertaining and fun to listen to. I hope he also maybe teaches part time. Would be a great professor.

I lived in S.America and chewed coca leave daily for months. After I left did not even have 1 day of addiction withdraws. Cleanest drug I ever did. Coca leaves are amazing!

Seeing a lot of people missing the point and getting in fights down here over such a petty "issue" . Most of the guests on the podcast share information that's widely available unless its an anecdote. Never seen this reaction when its a researcher or scientist talking about information that's already been published. Guest even states multiple times that it's not new information, its about revisiting the interesting history and diving into more detail related to it. Having someone breakdown an interesting history and the timeline of that history in a cohesive way is no different than 90% of the history/science/research based interviews Joe has done. Cheers all. Keep Kind <3

I just went to the Georgia Coke factory last week. I remember as a child going there. The hostess told us original coke had "coke" in it. I was quite disappointed when they didn't say anything about it this time. I wanted my daughter to remember it as well.

A lot of jaded people in the comments. Enjoy the dudes passion for a certain topic in history. Christ. How many books on Alexander the Great you think exist?

Hey there! Some years ago I and 3 other family members spent a month in Peru. When we came to the higher elevations we were given coca tea every morning. There is also coca candy. Yes, the native Peruvians have long used it by chewing the leaves. Plus they used it in trade. Back then - and even now - the rural natives do not go out without it ~ just like you wouldn't go out without your wallet (or maybe a debit card). Believe me, the natural leaves do not have any effect like cocaine! Sure, it was weird at first for this group of elderly people (58-88 Yrs), but it sure helped serve the purpose of being able to manage the very high elevations.
