Question #1: Throughout the movie, Captain Ramsey sizes up and tests his executive officer in a variety of ways. Provide at least one example of this. As a leader, would you go about testing a new subordinate as the Captain does? Why or why not?
Question #2: Consider the missile drill Captain Ramsey runs right after the fire is extinguished. Listen to the Captainโs rationale for running the drill at that time. After considering what he says, do you think you would have run the drill at that time? Why or why not? Do you think he may have been testing his new executive officer?
Question #3: After watching the film, we know how it comes out in the end. However, often leaders do not have the luxury of such information while making decisions in dynamic situations. Assuming you did not know how it would come out, do you think if you were the captain that you would have launched the missiles, or continued trying to establish radio communication to confirm the original order? Would the unprovoked attack by the Russian submarine influence your decision one way or another?
