They are two different animals. One stores power and the other generates power. There really is no comparison.

I'm glad you know the difference between a generator and a battery system, that's a breath of fresh air to me. So many battery systems today are calling themselves generators... they're not the same things at all.

This is great for short-term use for remote tool use or maybe a weekend camping trip. It's great for an emergency evacuation situation. For longer-term camping, I recommend a dual-fuel (gas/propane) generator or even a solar generator if you have reliable sun. However after riding out Hurricane Ida last year, I wholeheartedly recommend a whole-house generator. It saved our bacon... and everything else frozen and refrigerated.

I know it's fun to argue on the internet, but some of these comments are intentionally obtuse... She is not saying a battery bank is a replacement for ALL generators. She is speaking in the context of using power tools or other limited power needs. The comparison is between plugging your tools into a running generator all day, or into a quiet battery. That's all. She's not saying it is directly comparable to a generator in every way, that it can replace a generator in every situation, or that is will save you when the Zombie apocalypse comes. Let's stop pretending we don't get that...

My issue is, a generator can sit for years even decades and still be usable with some gas. The battery version has to be checked every so often and are temperature sensitive. Also, the generator is ready to produce power immediately, the batteries have to be charged before even using it. Each has it's place but I would not consider it a apples to apples comparison.

They are great for picnics, outings and emergency power! Wonderful! For those peppers out there that buy for EMP’s, stick with the Gas Gen’s w/the pull start if that’s your goal for prep’s. Those will still work after an EMP.

We purchased this model a few weeks ago with solar panels. It’s a great thing to have if we ever face a SHTF situation.

I had the river and an additional battery
The 12v charger melted my brand new 12v plug in 21 van. Destroyed it. Had the 160 solar panel but didn’t charge well. Customer Service was tough to reach. They kept asking me to wait 48 hrs etc
About a month later I was able to return it
But it was super complicated since I as already off grid camping and had a full fridge full of food. Maybe if just using ac it’s not an issue. Ultimately I was able to get a refund.
Im glad it worked well for you April. Sounds like good power and quieter.

Sounds like it would be a great back up power source or great alternative. Thanks for the info April!

What about during a Hurricane or Blizzard when you lose power for a week or longer?
How do you charge it after the first couple hours of use?

Yeah, amazing difference when camping to run laptops, phone chargers and lights all weekend without the noise and fumes of a generator.

We have a small version and its nice for keeping gadgets charged on camping trips and powering our tent camper lamp. I have a 50 year old GE Electrak electric tractor that mimics this power station using a modern inverter. I can power the family room and the fridge all night. If the outage is longer than that, I can break out our generator. I recommend a quiet inverter generator - at least 3500W. With the Eco setting, most can run for many hours per tank of fuel and no annoy anyone b/c they are quiet. When there is a small load, it throttles down to nearly an idle. Solar panels are good too if you have enough and the skies are bright and clear. Charge while you are using battery power. Isn't it great we have so many choices in 2022? Just takes money...

You could charge your power station with a generator or solar panel or if you have intermittent power. So in certain situations power stations can save you some money.

Power stations are great for short bursts of power. They will operate a variety of tools (with normal on-and-off use) all day long. Where you need a generator is if you are running a significant load for an extended time, like a space heater, air conditioner, or irrigation pump. In those situations, batteries will drain quickly.

I have a Goal Zero and love that it can charge with a solar panel.
