He did t die in the bridge. He and the designer (Thomas Andrews) were seen jumping off the ship just as the water reached the bridge. The Cameron movie was full of errors and sensationalism.

When you’re responsible for the safety of 2, 000 lives aboard your ship, you damn well better have an appreciation and respect for what could possibly harm (or kill) your passengers. Capt. Smith seemed more concerned with showing the world how his new vessel (the greatest of her kind), could sail from England to New York in record time, icebergs be damned. Or he felt pressured by the ship’s owner to get the Titanic to NYC in record time. Either way, Smith failed to truly put the safety of his passengers first. A good captain, be it of a ship or plane, doesn’t let ego interfere with his primary responsibility.
