The Perseverance rover successfully collected its first Martian core samples that NASA and ESA (the European Space Agency) plan to return to Earth for further study. Now, join NASA experts as they discuss what they’ve learned from the rover’s instruments about the rock that was sampled and what these historic samples mean for the U.S.-European Mars Sample Return campaign in development.

The speakers for this event include:
• Lori Glaze, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division
• Jessica Samuels, Perseverance surface mission manager, NASA JPL
• Matt Robinson, Perseverance strategic sampling operations team chief, NASA JPL
• Katie Stack Morgan, Perseverance deputy project scientist, NASA JPL
• Yulia Goreva, Perseverance return sample investigation scientist, NASA JPL
• Meenakshi Wadhwa, Mars sample return principal scientist, NASA JPL and Arizona State University

I'm impressed at the idea of drilling these samples and setting them aside to be picked up at a later date when we have the ability to do so. That's like sending a pound of coffee beans and a French press to Mars so there'll be something to drink when we get there. 😮

Its just so amazing to think that we have a craft on a planet that I regularly look at.

I wonder if there are any plans to put "Lidar" application onto a rover to see beneath the surface like we can here on earth, or is that not a possibility because of the environment just curious tis all.

Let's see from the Rover's camera glass at dawn or in the morning if there is dew falling because if there is dew it drops the Rover's camera glass is a bit blurry

After an extensive search for past life on mars, what will be more profound, , , , if you find past life or if you don't find past life on mars?

Anticipation and Patience. We wait in anticipation having lots of patience. These missions are just awesome. And I think so many of us are leaning towards it that life must have existed on Mars at some point. That some forms of life might still exist on mars today also. But we will have to wait and see as these great NASA scientists do their job. Anticipation and Patience - Some names for future crafts... Although names like Speedy and Now! would have been great - just not yet practical.

The discovery of sulphates and salts in the igneous rock sampled by Perseverance is really significant, as it corroborates our understanding of the geological and environmental history of the Jezero Crater region. Standing water, flowing water, all over extended periods of time.

I'm glad, as well, that the deputy project lead, Katie Stack Morgan, publicly acknowledged the importance of the contributions made by "thousands of engineers" to the development of the tools being used by the mission scientists managing the core acquisition effort.

Wow, amazing. Let's hope we are still here on earth when the samples arrive. Climate change may induce starvation and dehydration by then.

Na... should be focusing on Europa. We know its got present water. Why we still roving on mars looking for ancient dried lakes.

Im happy we found aluminum still.

Sucks to be the database guy when the samples have names of French massifs instead of convenient alphanumeric codes. Also first twin-holes appear to be in float (subcrop at best). Also twin holes are kinda excessive at this point/not good budget decision.

Without dumb people, without religions, without markething and those enterprice BS things.

Please try to push mars to a full scientific colony.
