4:58 you are correct, they are representations, not actual players in a hub area with you. they represent the players in that planet who are actively in a mission calling down stratagems or helldiving, however if you look at them from the automatons side of the galaxy map you'll start to notice that some ships are getting blown up. those represent failed missions. once that realization starts to set in you begin to realize just how pitched our battles against them are, especially in malevelon creek.

just 3 days ago we suffered a catastrophic defeat in malevelon creek (the latest in a series of community led counter-offensives) and unlike most other automaton planets where you would see a ship blow up every few minutes, in malevelon creek you get to see anywhere from 5 to 20 ships blowing up every minute, with several falling into the planet before going nuclear. and in the end of the counter-offensive every ship was lost, the skies above malevelon creek was devoid of our fleets, for they have all joined the graveyard below.

In HellDivers 2 the Player is really the ship, the divers are just disposable fodder
