Karate has a little bit of everything: some joint and grappling, punches and kicks and takedowns. Anyone who practices old traditional Okinawan karate will notice that

That is the simplest, fastest, and most accurate description of karate I’ve ever heard. Thank you.

Karate is a system geared towards but not limited to civilian self-defense.

Which reminds me that I need to practice Tekki Nidan & Sandan later. While also looking into getting a new nice functional uniform 🥋

Wow I just noticed that you are coming up on 50k subs Mr Dan. I remember when you first started posting videos. Found you from a post you made over in the r/martialarts sub reddit. You have made a big difference in my life Mr Dan thank you and keep up the good work.

Do you class Kempo/Kenpo as a form of Karate? Most people seem split down the middle on whether it is it’s own style, or a part of the Karate.

Nope. Sorry. Where I do like your series on Shotokan, you opening definition of Karate here is not accurate.
What distinguishes real karate from the multitude of organizations out there who teach punching, kicking, and striking and call it "Karate", is the emphasis on and the correct teaching of "kime", or "kime-waza".
This concept is present and prioritized in nearly all traditional Japanese arts, even calligraphy and tea ceremony.
Kime-waza, ikken hissatsu, Ichigo ichie, and several other related concepts, if they are not present in the teaching of every technique or movement, it is NOT karate.
