The best image size for youtube thumbnail is NOT 1280 x 720! You need a higher youtube thumbnail resolution size for YouTube.

A lot of creators seem to think that a thumbnail of 1280x720 is the best resolution.
And I can’t blame them for thinking that because that is what Youtube says on their own support page.

However, that is not true according to the YouTube engineer that worked thumnails.
While 1280x720 still works, it is not the BEST resolution.
Not for the viewer, but for the algorithm.

Because if you make your thumbnail resolution higher, the algorithm has simply more information to work with to determine what is in the thumbnail in terms of text, objects, faces etc.
Therefore it can better determine the topic of the video and therefore the ranking.

But what is the best youtube thumbnail high resolution then?
The minimum recommended thumbnail resolution is 1920x1080.
And 1920x1080 That is the same resolution as an HD video.

However the algorithm doesn’t click, the human does.
But how can you hack the viewers’ brain with the help of psychology that they can only click on your video?

I have been making all my thumbnails in the 1280 x 720 format. Are the ratios the same with 1920 x 1080? - just a larger image?

The 2mb upload limit is the issue for me. A 1920x1080 PNG file is usually too large for uploading. Are you saying a 1920x1080 JPEG file is better than a 1280x720 PNG file? Thank you!

when I try to use 1920x1080 the image size is over 2MB, how can I use this for YT thumbnails when youtube locks users to only use images under 2MB?
