Are YouTube thumbnails REALLY this easy now?

What does it mean to make a "good" YouTube thumbnail? Do you need to be a graphic designer? Or is some white text on a black background enough in 2023?

💡What are those lights in the background?💡

The best advice I heard on thumbnails so far is to think of it as packaging for a product. It's like you're walking through the grocery store, browsing, and all of a sudden something jumps out at you, and the packaging, and what it might contain, is so irresistible that you put it in your basket. The packaging is the thumbnail, the title, and the idea behind the video. My job is to make sure that packaging is appealing so they see it and can't help but want to pick it up. It's marketing.

You're definitely right about thumbnails on mobile phones looking much different than on a big monitor. One of the things I do with new thumbnails on new videos is to watch the CTR. If the CTR rate is smaller than usual or dropping fast I start working up new thumbnails. It may be adding or removing text, or a new title, or a new image all together. Once the CTR stabilizes or even starts to increase I leave it and make a note of what I did to improve the CTR for my next videos. It's still an ongoing learning process. I've learned to not fall in love with my first thumbnail for any video.🐸

I think that the best thing to do is just give your viewers what they want to see xD It's like owning a business, you give people the products/services they want or need in their life. Of course, it can be sometimes really tough to start channel, but consistency and hard work (with a little bit of Famester of course) will always pay off at the end!!

The only issue with using Mr Beast as a example is he's literally the top of the top. Theres a high chance Youtube will just show everyone his video even if they never watched him before. His videos pop up for me and i havent watched his videos since the squid game one. Or even that type of video, I mostly watch Hiphop related content. Mr Beast can literally just make a video with a blank thumbnail and it will get at least 80m views and by it getting alot of views YT will push it because it has ads and makes YT money.

For my animations I always use black and gray thumbnails, this is really helpful!!

Great advice, but most of 98% of youtubers are all in one, so we miss minor or huge details 🙂

Last year I wasn't using any thumbnails at all, just an in game screenshot and my videos pulled in 100Ks of views each, considering the game I covered had a max view potential of about 300K views per video, that was kinda impressive, and that was on short 1min videos where AVD and Watch Time cannot carry the video's performance. CTR was averaging 30-35%

Great video as always guys! I made the mistake of basically putting my title in my thumbnails but then I realized that less is more pretty much. So I focused more on grabbing clean screenshots and using arrows. Sometimes I'll still use text but mostly have been trying to go textless

This was one of the clearest videos I have ever seen on making good thumbnails.

Loved it! ❤

Ive been making good thumbnails and usually end up with 5-11% CTR which is honestly really good for being in the gaming niche. (2 hours max working on some of the thumbs) I even have a guide video at 20.2% CTR which still pulls in views for me 5 years later and its the most basic thumb ever 😂

Whoa, do I need this! I recently began a youtube channel and all the info online from analytics to design was overwhelming. As such, I just said that I'll practice making vids first, THEN study analytics and Lastly thumbnail design. If you see my vids, none have 'thumbnails' and today is the day I decided to delve into that and BAM your video showed up! Again, great vid!

awesome video! very accurate... I myself keep struggling with thumbnails, also because I often don't have access to good source material, which means I have to work with screenshots from the video's most of the time... And that's far from ideal. Both because of the resolution of the material not always being great, but also because I'm limited in telling the story with the material I've got... Also doesn't help I don't really like making thumbnails tbh... I love the video editing soo much more. So I know my thumbnails are a big reason why my channel doesn't grow that fast, but also don't really know how to improve (besides the constant improving and learning I'm always doing for everything on my channels, thumbnails included).

If thumbnails are that easy now, then that could either be super good news, or super bad news. Anyway, from my experience, making a good thumbnail (even with the help of all the nice tools we have today) still takes plenty of practice. You can have all the best tools, but if you don't have the basics down, your thumbnail can end up worse than it began.

The thumbnail is ironically interesting because of the arranging of the words, the word boring highlighted just made it interesting

Didnt know there was a website that lets you preview your thumbnails on different devices! Thats definitely gonna be more than helpful for me since they may look amazing on my laptop in the editor but looks like garbage on the YT site or app when i add them to ny video ot stream

Good idea and I think title is more effective now and the first 10 seconds when Youtube auto plays the video. I go for big text in my videos at the start to grab the viewer's attention. But thumbnails still need to be good but do not spend forever on them mine take 20 minutes if that and my CTR averages over 20 percent.
