How to Replace a Torque Converter Seal | 1995 Ford F150

In this video, I show you how to replace the torque converter seal on this 4r70w transmission in my 1995 Ford F150. The seal only leaked during the winter when I would start or turn off my truck. I believe the seal deformed due to overheating. I didn't replace it with a Viton seal though. So far it is leak free. First, you will need to remove your transmission. Once the transmission has been removed, you can access the TC seal. Using a seal puller, pry at the seal and it should come loose. Clean up the seal area and make sure it is free of old RTV and dirty. Apply 500 degree fast drying RTV to the outer and underside of the seal. Then set the seal over its seating area. Using a 2-1/2 pipe CPVC conduit, tap the seal into place until fully seated. Once the seal is fully installed, clean up the extra RTV and that's it.

Thanks for the video, appreciate the info. Have you pulled it for a rebuild and if so have you done a video on that process?

I hope the bushing in the front is good because if not it will take out the new seal as well.... But they may have fixed that design flaw by then.

I can't believe you threw that at us!

Isn’t there a large o-ring and flat surface gasket around the pump that also shrinks and leaks with age? Did you replace the o-ring? Experience says reseal everything with new once you have transmission out. My 2 cents.

Should always check fitment of seal to torque converter for proper fitment

"Finished look"? is there going to be a nano-cam in there monitoring when running? Amazing. ;)

When transmission pukes fluid, ,, I think the seal don’t stop to actually. I just change the pump and the torque

Most of the time it's the bushing behind the seal is what's causing the leak I have figured out the hard way to replace them both and not just the seal

With that leaking Will your truck go forward

It looks like you have the channel side of the seal facing away from the transmission? I'm not a transmission expert, but I usually see the seal channel pointed toward the transmission.

Is the rtv on the seal absolutely necessary? TIA

i notice the notches on the bushing are side-to-side. in the manual they are picture up-and-down.. do you know if that matters?

I hope I don’t have to do this anytime soon… More specifically removing the transmission.

How similar is this on a C6 (78 bronco) transmission?
