Afghanistan: Kabul under the Taliban | DW Documentary

Since the Taliban have seized power in Afghanistan, many people in Kabul live in fear losing their free way of life. Maryam is a journalist but can no longer report on what she would like to. Gholam is a musician but can no longer perform in public.

On top of everything else come overwhelming economic problems. Gholam, for example, has had to sell off his furnishings and even his refrigerator to provide for his family any way he could. At the same time, the faint hope that the Taliban might at least bring greater peace and security to a city ravaged by attacks has not been realized. Now, it’s as if the militias of the Islamic State terrorist group had a license to kill. The city’s young and well educated elite are in an especially desperate situation. A report by Nick Connolly.

I don't know how any level-headed American can watch this documentary and then decide to vote for leaders who want to suppress your rights and free speech.

Imagine all of your hopes and dreams, hobbies and things that make you happy. Having a garden. Singing. Learning a new language. Playing a musical instrument. And a group of people tell you, "NO, YOU CAN'T DO ANY OF THAT". The Taliban:

* can't protect their own people
* can't provide any jobs
* don't want their people, especially their women, doing *anything* other than praying

Well then, what's the point of being alive?

This is simultaneously uplifting and depressing. Uplifting in that these people are resisting the Taliban and aren't just rolling over for them. Depressing that these religious zealots just won't go back to the hole in the ground that spawned them.

Gee, funding religious zealots and giving them weapons to fight against the Soviet invasion. What could *possibly* go wrong!?

At first glance, I see beautiful people, simple but beautiful. Then I learn that a father or brother is capable of murdering his daughter. And I will never understand that, because my daughter is an angel to me and I am here to protect her. You are monsters, murdering each other, and I do not understand how God could have allowed you to breathe the same air in this world as we do.
