Huge props to the absolutely stellar tattoo artist that talked me out of getting a tattoo about 15 years ago. She was incredibly talented and did beautiful work, and apparently was an equally-skilled therapist, as she helped me understand that I really didn't want a tattoo.

The only time I accept "bad" tattoos are the ones where it's like, the person getting the tattoo has a small child, and they get a piece of a drawing their kid did. So like, the art is objectively not great because it was done by a literal child, but it really is special anyway and is exactly what the client wanted.

Not a tattoo artist, but still an artist nonetheless - all I can say is.. yeah, a lot of these really seem like they were done by an artist who doesn’t specialize in whatever the tattoo was supposed to be. Even work by some of the worlds greatest artists won’t always look the greatest if it’s outside of their skillset.

So yeah… definitely make sure to find someone who can do what your looking for, this honestly applies to all art- don’t commission a portrait artist to do a landscape, make sure to find an artist who can do what you want.

The thing about bad tattoos meaning something reminds me of my first tattoo. I’ve got a faded, terrible stick and poke of a rat above my knee, that was done by a dear friend. The day I got it done was huge for me, and I plan on getting it redone. It was the first thing I’d ever done to permanently change my body, and felt like a stepping stone to being the person I want to be. It’s ugly and poorly done, but I love it so dearly.
