After the chaos and uncertainty of 2020, conservatives from across the country have flocked to a region around North Idaho known as the American Redoubt. While many come just to escape cities and be among their own, some are seeking to change the region, imposing their fears and ideas of liberty on local politics. VICE News' Vegas Tenold explores what it means to be free in a nation of political bubbles.

This segment is from the show ‘VICE’ which originally aired in November 2021.

Social media and the internet has connected everyone with convenience and at the same time further divided everyone with proximity. Truly a bane of civility.

Do Americans just call something communism or fascism when they disagree with it? Terms are crazy overused these days.

The real danger is the mentality of "if you aren't my friend, you're my enemy".

This video seemed pretty honest, I didn’t feel like they were gaslighting anyone with this video at the very least. Sometimes vice will be completely un-biased like this and it’s refreshing!

Those commissioners and the younger dude at the 12:00 mark are the only sensible people in the entire video.

Producer to editor: "Make sure to play weird creepy sounding music throughout the video, even when someone is just making clothes with a cotton spinning machine"

This is really nothing new. This is the same region where the Ruby Ridge incident went down. Fans of a particular Austrian artist have had compounds up there for decades.

I was born and raised in Idaho, left 25 years ago. There's parts of that state that I will not set foot in now. It wasn't always like this there, it was a great place to grow up when I did.

As a San Franciscan native, I've always been Moderate Center Classical Liberal (to put labels to it). Before moving to Coeur d'Alene, ID for 3 years of my early 20's, I leaned more left. One day a Trump rally drove by my apartment, and I yelled at them with hate. At that moment, I noticed how dark it is to despise others who think differently but also just live differently than you. Now I am back in SF, I miss CdA but I don't miss home despite the vile nature of this concrete jungle. I'd say I'm neither right nor left leaning, but I have become more conservative since my tenure there in ID. I wan't my city to come back to reality. I don't need to leave home and start new, I can spark something enough to rejuvenate my beautiful city. Let me tell you, a lot more conservative/ classical liberal's and even Libertarians out here in SF than one thinks. Real Marxism and Socialism is here, not in Idaho. That being said, hate on either side must stop. We are all Americans. We are all family. Let's pop the bubble and start talking, and letting life be. Do unto others as you'd want them to do unto you. Oro en Paz, Ferro en Guerra.

When only people who think like you are allowed, that's not freedom.

I’ve been to Sandpoint. It’s beautiful up there but man, the place is extremely slanted in favor of one demographic.
