I had a rough idle when starting the engine so after investigating i found that the intake solenoid had a lot of dirt deposit, i cleaned it and also changed the oring.
Car is Bmw f20 n13b16 engine.
I also cleaned the exhaust solenoid but there was just a few deposits.
I had the same problem with bmw n46b20 engine, the solenoids are in front of the engine so it is easier to clean them.

Which were the symptoms that led you to a faulty VANOS solenoid? I have been trying to diagnose a drivetrain error on this engine for a couple months now..

If you vanos solenoids are that dirty I would %100 check the non return valves. They cause vanos solenoid failure and will give you all the vanos codes

whats easiest way to access the intake solenoid? ive got the good old drive train malfuntion and going through process to eliminate it. ive done the exhaust side which wasnt to bad but only briefly looked at intake side and looks to be a pain for access....
