The $10bn James Webb telescope has left Earth on its mission to show the first stars to light up the Universe.

The observatory was lifted skyward by an Ariane rocket from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana.

Its flight to orbit lasted just under half an hour, with a signal confirming a successful outcome picked up by a ground antenna at Malindi in Kenya.

Webb, named after one of the architects of the Apollo Moon landings, is the successor to the Hubble telescope.

This is AMAZING. This project started on the 1980s when I was a toddler. HUGE ACCOMPLISHMENT. Was nervous when it launched.

This is going to be absolutely incredible. After so many years of waiting and countless billions of dollars spent on this, it is so satisfying to see it finally launched into space. I was so getting worried we would never see the end of its development. Now we just have to wait for it to unfurl itself once it heads further out and we can finally get the first images back. It is going to be truly incredible.

Must have been one of the most nerve wracking projects for anyone involved. To think if something goes wrong, the chances of fixing it are next to zero. Now that's pressure

Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.
