I pointed my telescope at the sun (don't try at home)

Hello everyone! In this video I do a quick walkthrough of how I capture my solar images! It goes over setup, why filters are important, how to look at the sun, how lucky imaging works, and how images of the sun usually have false color. If you want to know what equipment I used to capture these images, here you go:

Thanks for watching!

I pointed my 127 EQ at the sun when I was 12. I still have the picture of me outside with my telescope pointing my telescope at the sun, the fact that I still have a right eye is a miracle.

This is how much I know about the sun. I went outside on my driveway at about 10:00 am and felt the warmth of the sun and knew I could wear shorts today. Thank You and all others that watch and study that little light in the sky.

“don’t try at home” continues to show step by step how to do this at home

I look at the sun using welding glass, it’s startling just how small the sun actually is and still, it’s casts all that energy on us, wow.

Sweet setup. Definitely helps me appreciate astrophotography as a whole.

I've got the Bresser 127L which I use with a Herchel wedge & that works well for white light & I've got a couple of Coronado PST's one for Ha the other for Cak although getting a camera to work well on those is tricky but not impossible

Note: Per Daystar any scope larger than 102mm or 4"/5" should have a ERF filter on the front. I was told on the Solar CloudyNights forum that you can use a 99% Dielectric diagonal with a Ha filter threaded in front to reduce/block of the solar heat. I reached out to Daystar and they said that a 80mm to 102mm scope and smaller no need for a ERF filter, but when a 120mm/130mm and larger then the amount of heat from the Sun needs a ERF filter in front, I wished they were not so costly! Looking forward using my Daystar and my 102mm scope and the ZWO 533 camera. Thanks

Can you please do this video again with the new speculations of a sun simulator?

VERY good info. Thank you. I've been meaning to try this. And great trick of looking for the circle shadow to point the scope. I was wondering how I'd point it safely.

I have some Badder solar film and a Optolong L-Ultimate Dual Bandpass. I know the Badder film will work, but will the Optolong work? Does it have to heat up, or did you use a special solar Ha filter that has to heat up? Thanks!

Are you selecting / stacking video frames in Autostakkert RegiStax, or something else?

And congrats on your helping with the M31 [OIII] emission arc. That's very cool.

I have a question, as you know, the sun tilts 7.25 degrees, and the earth revolves around the sun after six months. Does the sun’s tilt change direction, or is it the same position? for all the year

Awesome video. Could you show your editing process in a bit slower? It's always nice to get some more inspiration for my own work flow. Your images look distinctly different from what I usually achieve

Try that 127 on some nebula using SHO! :-) The Field Curvature shouldn't be too terrible on a micro 4/3rd's. A focal proper reducer could be fitted but probably need to switch out the focuser..

How much time did the storms actually took to reach from 1 place to another in the end of the video? In how much time do we actually see it?

Why do we make the sun yellow or orange? Isn't its real color white?
