As a new #nurse what should you carry with you? What are you MUST haves? What do you carry with you at all times? What is on your person every shift?

I share 8 (yes a bonus) things that were always on my person when I was a bedside Nurse working in the ICU:

1. Stethoscope
2. Transpore tape
3. Watch
4. Scissors (trauma shears)
5. Clamp
6. Alcohol pads
7. Sharpie
8. 10cc flushes

Until next time…

You know how much I love coffee.

Several extra must haves for me on med/surg - 2x2 gauze pads, pen light, pulse ox, and a Handful of Gloves. Also caps for IV tubing or or secondaries so that you don't contaminate the ends.

Just finding this channel but I'm pretty sure I'm subscribed to your podcast. Always good having an experienced nurse making videos on youtube.

Thanks, I was trying to explain to out daughter in nursing why hemostats are a necessity. I said they seem unnecessary but are not. They are like the multi tool or pliers of nursing. You’ll find sooo many uses for them.

One thing I LOVE is having some post-it notes for whenever I remember something I can just jot it down real quick

I always have a small pulse oximeter. Probably wouldn't be useful in the icu but on med surg it comes in handy all the time.

Used those 10cc for when you ran out of them pink bullets for the vent. Flushing the suction line, lavages, empty it out and adjust the cuff. You name it

I've seen a doctor use a normal saline flush to get something out of their eye! Talk about the convenience.

I never carried clamps, but always have a small bag of sterilised gauze. Too many parents pulling out their IV's

I suppose pen and pad goes without saying?

I would add that I also bring with me my "Fast facts for critical care" book with me as well for reference throughout the day.

always had 2 sets of gloves in my pockets. As much as rooms might have them I kept them for the found patient in bathroom on the floor situations. ER nurses carry everything!

I always have a few pens, a note book (usually use that to write down if somebody has high or low bp, hr, spo2, temp etc), I keep a roll of tape around my ID badge to tape up lines so they don’t bother my patients and things like that, my fob watch and my handover sheet
