I didn't realize "rock climbing" could just be climbing a reasonably large boulder or two with your friends.

Watching their bodies just fall off those rocks makes me wondering how this becomes a hobby lol

Incorrect, everything is a jug if you’re strong enough.

We just aren’t strong enough.

Yet.

I personally love to get shut down by a problem that is “below my grade”- it makes me aware of my weaknesses and allows me to set goals for improvement. I was a climber that relied on pure power and upper body strength until I was challenged by my peers to climb a wild friction climb on a sandstone bolder called “Harry spotter” on a steep hillside in oregon. This route was more of a balancing act and that forced me to adopt a more gentle style of climbing. It was more about the bodies balance point and weight distribution than strength.

This can also be applied to so many other areas of life, and is a good thing to remember. I'm no rock climber, but still felt the message was applicable to so many areas of my life.

Love the message, but the way you guys look out for each other with the mats and being ready to catch (which would really hurt lol) is excellent. 10/10 climber mates.

my mom used to do rock climbing and she always took me with her on climbing trips. i always hated it because i preferred sitting at home and reading but it was fun looking back :D this just reminded me of this, thank you

I started climbing with a friend who could climb v8 consistently so I had a great coach to point out my weaknesses. I never chased grade unless it was for training purposes- within a couple years I was climbing v7 and v8as well as leading 5.12 and 5.13 sport routes.

I was encouraged to find ways to make static moves to holds instead of using sheer power and big movements and this greatly increased my ability to solve difficult problems on less than welcoming holds.

Developing the skills to make controlled static moves is the only reason I was able to jump grades so quickly. Power alone can only get you so far.

FINALLY!

It's not the grade, it's the style, the development of yourself In climbing.

Thank God

i have an amazing climbing buddy who i have been climbing with (mostly indoor bouldering) for the past 2+ years, and together we made the journey from vb/0 to v5/6. the whole time i have been reminded of our different climbing styles, sometimes i can flash a climb that he can barely get a few of the moves on, and sometimes he will climb up something where i literally cant even hold the start, with my style being more powerful and dynamic, and his being tricky and crimpy. i think this video has a great message and focusing on how you feel climbing is more importaint grades.

I love how bouldering literally boils down to that childhood instinct to climb up a big rock.

I realized this a few years back. I’m not much of a climber and one of my friends ask me to go to a climbing gym with him. He’s a significantly better climber than I am yet when it came to one problem I got up it first try and he was unable to get past the first hold. It was very demanding on the legs so I think that’s what did it.
