great video!! i own 2017 civic 1.0 its been a nice car to drive.here in Sri lanka many customers faced the so called AC condensor issue including me. had to fill up r1234yf and replace ac condensor. and some users here complained their turbo failed. this happened becuse of the use of semi synthetic engine oils. NEVER PUT SEMI SYN ON TURBOS! this car is soo sensitive.. but such a fun car to drive AND this car loves highways!best fuel economy 4/2l/100km which ive achieved.. keep doing videos about this model Brian! been watching since u started this series. cheers!

Was seriously considering this engine but dropped the idea as i read many reports on online forums of timing belts prematurely failing on these with people requiring new engines which honda doesn't cover out of warranty. Also turbos siezing are common which will cost you around £1900 + labour again not covered once out of warranty. These are a belt in an oil bath design and are flawed - apparently the belt sheds particles that can block oil pathways causing turbos to seize. Hence its import to change the oil every 5-7k miles. Also given the design, its not easy to change the belt like in older cars with timing belts. Also the cost to change the belt in the UK is in the thousands not hundreds. It costs at least £1500-1800 from what i read on the forums. This has been one of hondas most unreliable units unlike their previous gen engines. DYOR before buying. Google it.

That was not a timingbelt showing 4:20 min in the video, but the fan belt. Only reason to use timingbelt is its cheaper for the factory but more expensive for the customer when it needs to be replaced every 6 years. It is very difficult to get a price for changing the timing belt in Denmark because the car is not that old, but a Honda workshop has said that the engine must be removed when the timing belt is changed... DKK 20, 000. or 2700 euros. It's ridiculous. Go for 1.5 L

Honda has lost its way. There’s a recall on timing belts for some models. Doing it for free! Great news - not quite. The majority of conscientious owners have already paid out the £1k+ as car is over 6yrs old!
Had mine changed last month and paid the extortionate amount, and last week had a letter from Honda that they will replace for free, but no refund.
Good bye Honda.

Love the car. Mine has sprung an oil leak between the engine and cvt gearbox. According to the dealer, it’s a common problem with the 1L versions after about 38k km. Will need to get the seals re-done and that requires lifting the engine out of its bay; pretty complex.

Honda UK now £1700 to do a timing belt on one of these what an absolute disgrace.

I've seen civic with the 1.0l on autotrader with 95k miles in it. So I guess the reliability is there. I've heard one guy had problems with oil starvation caused by the timing belt and it was at low mileage also. Ours sits at 60k miles now so probably next year will do the timing belt on it. I don't know if any independent garage will handle this job. My only option might be Honda dealership. I was quoted £800 at my local Honda. Quite a lot for a timing belt change. I don't like it when the serviceable items costs nearly 1k to do. Puts me right off and most people sell it just before the timing belt interval.

In Sweden it costs around 27 000 SEK (2400 EURO) to change the timing belt, including water pump. Thats why i bought the 1.5 instead.

I own one of these(CVT), I love how it sounds. The only thing I don't like is the turbo lag while using on the town

My first question is how much does the engine weigh? That’s engine, including cooling system, including fluids, but specifying what fluids and what quantity.

As long as the engine has regular oil changes then there want be any issues with he timing belt.

I've seen the belt runs in oil and the engine is low friction as possible. It has fast warm up properties and lightweight block. It is torquey but does have a bit of rev hang. I drove from Manchester to Birmingham the other day on M6 motorway and achieved 70.1 mpg over 90miles run (have a camera pic to prove). I didn't realise it needs an interim oil change every 7000miles or so, but fixed cost of £125 in UK. So not too bad.

Thank you Brian, your videos are always very informative .I would like to know if it is safe to perform engine tune on my 2019 civic 1.0T hatchback, as i want to tune it to stage 1 which is almost from 124hp to 150hp and from 200Nm to 240Nmgain . I saw a video by br performance on YouTube but wont find any information regarding tune if it is safe or not .please reply!

Thanks for the video Brian very informative, I have a question regarding the same 1.0 turbo you have reviewed in the video for a friend. She currently has here car in with the mechanic due to a faulty turbo in the 17-2 model. The total cost of the replacement and service is coming to 3k, the mechanic who we have both had our car with many times mentioned that he did a bit of research on the newer model civic's and he found that there has been a high amount of reported faults with this models turbo. I'm wondering if you could shed some light on this and let me know if there is actually any truth in his statement? He even went as far to say he would have always sworn by Honda's and Toyota's but after his finding he'd be steering people away from buy this model. She'd be a very conservative driver unlike me on the other hand. Thanks in advance!

What I know is that this engine was not invented by Honda, it was inventing by a German composition, Honda commissioned that company to invent this engine in order to sell more cars in European, this engine is not only for Honda Civic in China, but also for Honda Credier and Honda Envix in China. The sells of 1.0T Civic in China is very terrible, even not a single three-cylinder Civic was sold last month, so Honda decided to use a 1.5L NA engine to replace 1.0T engine in China
