Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has been adapted for the big and small screens many times over the years, and this generation got a big-budget adaptation directed by Tim Burton and starring Mia Wasikowska as Alice.

However, back in the '50s, Lewis Carroll’s beloved book was brought to life by Walt Disney Productions in their 1951 animated film Alice in Wonderland. It didn't receive the best reviews when it first came out, but it has only grown in popularity in the years since, and is now widely acclaimed.

The 1951 movie is constantly being revisited by new generations of kids, teenagers, and young adults for various reasons, but here are things only adults will notice in Alice in Wonderland.

Old classic animated Disney films were so beautiful. The artistry and the time and effort that went into them isn't lost on me.

I always thought that Alice’s adventure was really just an entire dream. (After getting off the tree with Dina, she sits down and falls asleep, listening to her sister reading a book. The whole laying in flowers, laying by the water/singing and seeing and following the white rabbit & falling down the rabbit hole scenes didn’t really happen.) [at the end of the movie, we see Alice sleeping, and Alice desperately trying to ‘wake herself up’ — “Alice, wake up! Please wake up, Alice! Alice! Please wake up, Alice! Alice! Alice! Alice!”

In Carroll's original book,
the last few stanzas work
as an acrostic, meaning that
the first letter of each line
eventually spells out
a word or name--
in this case, the full name
of the girl who inspired the story,
Alice Pleasance Liddell.

As someone who's read both Alice books dozens of times, I've often wondered just how many of the characters are meant to be Lewis Carroll himself. I figure the Cheshire Cat definitely, and the Caterpillar, perhaps the White Rabbit, and the White Knight in "Through the Looking Glass". I'm less certain about characters like the Mock Turtle.

Before the 2000s, every kid played outside for hours by themselves.

Disney Alice in Wonderland(1951) is waaaay Better Than Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland Live Action Movie!I which we had a TV series, Animated series or Straight DVD Sequel!

Queen of Hearts not Red Queen. Though perfectly understandable mistake. Most film and live versions combine the two.

The flowers were not only verbally cruel, but one of them pulled up Alice's skirt, exposing Alice's undergarments. Not cool!

The Queen of Hearts' dress is like the flag of the State of Maryland. i think she's supposed to be Bloody Mary, the last Catholic Queen of England

I don't think that's her sister at the beginning of the movie, it's her nanny or tutor.

Go ask Alice has nothing to do with Alice in wonderland so I wouldn’t read it expecting to notice any symbolism.
