Life is old there, older than the trees - man, how time flies. We just passed the 50th anniversary of “Take Me Home, Country Roads” The big five oh. Can you believe it? It’s a song with so much power it’s been recognized in varied forms of media all around the globe—featured in the 1995 anime film “Whisper of the Heart”, the second Kingsman film, and most recently the sci-fi multiplayer game—Fallout 76. But you can’t honor that hit song without recognizing the legend behind it.
I’m Nostalgic Nick for DoYouRemember, and today we’re discussing the legacy of John Denver—a folk rocker who made some amazing strides and released some of the greatest pop-country hits of all time—
but sadly flew a little too close to the sun. If you enjoy this video, don’t leave on a jet plane, and give it a thumbs up, and subscribe to our channel for more throwbacks and bios. Now let’s rock onward:

My mother loved John Denver. And while she was dying of lung cancer, I sat by her the entire time and picked her songs off of YouTube to make her happy. I ended up playing "Grandma's Feather Bed" with John and the Muppets. After it was finished my mother laughed! Laughter was her last emotion as she passed away that next morning. So John Denver was spreading happiness and laughter even in 2012.

John played a huge part in my life. I got married in 1974 and all the music was by John, much to the chagrin of the priest. We walked out of the church holding hands to “Leaving on a Jet Plane” we danced to “My Sweet Lady” My eldest son became an Eagle Scout as the song “The Eagle and the Hawk” played. My husband and I went to every concert he did in Rhode Island and we knew where to stand as his car drove out of the arena and John would always give us a thumbs up as though we were friends. My husband and I divorced in 1997, remain friends and both still love John. I moved to California in June of 1997 and just 4 months later John was killed in the plane crash on Monterrey. I was devastated. I still am. Now a tear comes to my eye whenever I hear his songs. Love you John!

I lost my foot and part of my leg in 2017 following a bad accident on the TT circuit in the Isle of man. I was in hospital for a month and many is the nights where I grimaced in pain... I listen to John denvers music constantly to help me not focus on the pain. My favourite song by John is ...rhymes and reasons. He had a terrific gift which he shared with us all. I guess maybe he was saddened by all the BS that's happening in the world. I felt he sang with conviction and meaning, all his music came from within him . His live performances could be equated to Queens live aid performance. His music will live forever . In truth and from my heart, he was one artist I would have loved to have met and just shake his hand and say. Thank you for being there when I was very much alone with pain and losing hope. Thank you for reading this. Joey ...from Ireland 🇮🇪

I'm from West Virginia and no we never get tired of hearing Take Me Home Country Roads. To this day you can hear it at our fairs and festivals and at basketball and football games. We are so proud to have such a beautiful state song

The number one thing that artists do is commit 100% to what they feel they should do, and hope trust that it will resonate with someone. What critics do not understand is that John Denver's music, like everyone who has ever created anything, is not for everyone; but it is for someone. And the amount of someone's is a very large group.

Favorite song is from this list: Take Me Home Country Roads, I'm Sorry, Leaving On a Jet Plane, Annie's Song, Calypso, and the vastly underrated jewel Like a Sad Song.

Mr, Denver was next door neighbor to my grandparents in St. Peter, Minn. When they moved to Mesa, AZ, he would stop by and play songs for the seniors. I saw him 3 times when I was a child. He signed a photo for me that said Peace! Thank you for your music! Miss you!

Whenever I hear "Sunshine on my shoulders", I actually feel bathed in sunlight. It's such an amazingly powerful, beautiful yet simple song. That British critic who panned the song at John Denver's death was probably dropped as a baby.

Brilliant singer, songwriter and humanitarian. My favourite Denver song is Annie's Song. He loved his first wife incredibly even though he cheated on her. He said in an interview he was always so lonely without her when he went on tour that he just found women for company. Annie Martel admitted herself that if she had gone on tour with John as he had pleaded for her to do he would never have been unfaithful. His music will live forever.

When I was working in Aspen in 1982, I went to local restaurant, Eastern Winds I seem to recall, to see the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band perform. John Denver was in the audience which I thought was awesome. Then he was invited up to play some songs and as our group had a front table, I was sitting about 5 - 10 meters away. I’ll remember that night till the day I die.

Still love his music to this day . The beautiful Annie’s song, my own personal favourite. Country roads is still in my eyes a classic . A very sad loss, when he was taken from us .

I met John during one of his UK tours. I'm not sure of the year but around 1990. I was working as the director of a national HIV/AIDS training centre. I did go to a concert but one of my staff was part of the Hunger Project and I was invited to chat with him in their house. We didn't discuss music. We spoke of world hunger, AIDS, climate change and clean water projects. Of course, as someone who had heard his music and seen him on UK TV, I was delighted to meet him but it was his fierce but caring concern about these issues that impressed me when speaking with the man.
